Giddy!

How strange... no new posts on my f-list so far today?

Well, I'm glad to break the silence with happy, happy news!

I had gotten word a couple of weeks ago that I was going to be teaching 3 7th grade social studies, 1 7th grade economics elective (6 weeks long, repeating with different kids throughout the year), and a 6th grade social studies class. I was pretty weirded out by the 6th grade thing, as all my training and my certification was for 7-12th grades, until the state waved it's magic wand and *poof!* -- I was certified to teach 6-12. 6th grade is a lot more like elementary than I'm comfortable with, coming from the high school. I prefer the idea of helping kids transition to the high school rather than easing them up from elementary school.

Today, I was working in my room when the principal came up to visit. "The 7th grade social studies/8th grade US history position is open. Want it? I need to know in about an hour. We've got someone in mind to hire, but she could teach either that or what you're already scheduled to teach."

For a few seconds, I was considering sticking with the 6th grade, as the principal had mentioned earlier that he'd like me to get some experience with them, and that they did a lot of finagling to get me out of science. However, I looked at the resources I've gathered over the years and realized that this is the assignment I've been waiting for. I have tons of US History stuff.

So I have a new schedule! 3 sections of 8th grade US history (colonialism through the end of the 19th century) and 2 of 7th grade social studies (focuses on Eastern Hemisphere). This is *awesome*! I am FINALLY GOING TO TEACH SOMETHING IN MY MAJOR!!!!! I've worked for eleven years in this district, and I've taught precisely 1/2 of one class that correlates with my BA in history. There's been lots of biology and general science -- minors of mine. A little sociology -- another minor of mine. And some social studies -- a specialized endorsement. But the only history I've taught is one semester of 9th grade US History. This is gonna be fun!!!

SWEET!!!!!!!
