Do you know what's scary? If it could happen this easily in Thailand, what's to stop it from happening here?

To summarize, Thailand's king (a Buddhist) leaves the country for a meeting. The leader of the military (a Muslim) declares himself king, negates the country's constitution, and sends tanks throughout the country. He also takes all news networks off TV, so the citizens don't know what the hell is going on.
Seriously, what would you do? Everyone thinks America is immune to instability because everything's been fine for the past 200 years. But if the president left, and the military burned up the Constitution, and sent soldiers everywhere, and took all forms of information off the Internet and TV, you'd be screwed.
I know nothing's happened or is going to happen, but it's just unsettling thinking everyday life can change instantly like that.
