Notes on SPN 106: Skin

May 28, 2006 18:05

Dean as navigator, telling Sam the itinerary, Sam still absorbed in his old life, reading e-mail from friends.

"You're pretty antisocial," Sam tells Dean. "Yeah, whatever," Dean says. Because he is. When do we see Dean keeping in touch with anyone except other hunters (like Bobby in the finale)? I wonder what he was like growing up--did he keep to himself and his family, or did he try to make friends too? He keeps referring to himself and Sam as freaks in this ep. I wonder where he found that word.

--"What, am I supposed to cut them out of my life? ... You're kidding."
--"Job like this, you can't get close to people." And yet Dean does get close to some of the people they meet on the road, even knowing they have to leave them behind soon. And he got very serious with Cassie, who then dumped him. Sooner or later, everybody leaves, the shapeshifter says. He's right.

Dean says "college buddies", not "friends."

Sam lying about himself to his friends. Dean calling him on it. -- Dean lies to people all the time, but would he lie to someone he considered a true friend? Something tells me no. He didn't lie to Cassie, for example. I can't think of a time when he's dishonest with Sam or his father, either. You have fascinating depths, Dean.

Dean reluctant to get involved in other people's problems if they're not supernatural, but will b/c Sam asks him. (Aww...)

Sam lies with ease to friend. "Dean's a cop." I'm not making value judgments about this. Rather, I think Sam is still trying to define the boundaries in his life. What will he do or not do, and under what circumstances? Who gets to know which things about his life? He had thought he was done with hunting, but now he's back to it, and he has to find new ways of communicating with people. Everything's changing, and he has to adjust.

Impala still looks great.

Sam keen on exonerating college friend whose girlfriend was killed. Indicates sense of guilt over Jess.

Sam quick to notice flashing eyes on security tape. Just like he notices the Wendigo. He also realizes the shapeshifter is pretending to be Dean. Indicates detail-oriented way of looking at things. Sharp eye.

Dean not a morning person? Or just playing at being grumpy for Sam's benefit, to keep things light?

Dean: "Every culture in the world has a shapeshifter lore." Dean is knowledgeable on world folklore and superstition, as in other episodes. Not just a pretty face.

Both grossed out by shapeshifter sheddings.

--"You lie to your friends because if they knew the real you, they would be freaked. It's just, it would be easier--"
--"If I was like you."
--"Hey man, like it or not, we are not like other people." Dean's acceptance of who he is may be age-specific. As in, people in their early twenties, especially those in college or just out of, are still in the process of deciding who they are (more like, who they want to be). Dean at 26 would be past that stage. Given the shapeshifter's comments to Sam, though, it seems like Dean's had his own struggle for identity. What I wouldn't give to see him at 20 years old.

Dean tells Sam to go ahead when he's injured--"Get the son of a bitch!" Not protective here, but confident in Sam's abilities. Same when they split up.

Sam had stopped to help Dean until Dean sent him forward.

Mmm, Sam tied up....

"Bad background."

I read a transcript to see what the voices were saying as they were downloaded into the shapeshifter's mind, and it said hey were clips from previous episodes.

"He's sure got issues with you."

"You got to go to college. He had to stay home. ... With Dad. You don't think I had dreams of my own? But Dad needed me. And where the hell were you?" Sam has college friends, but Dean only has Sam.

"Deep down, I'm just jealous. You've got friends, you can have a life. I know I'm a freak. And sooner or later, everybody's going to leave me. You left, hell I did everything Dad asked me to, and Dad left me too. ... Left me with your sorry ass."

"You know Dean'd bang her if he had the chance." -- Dean as womanizer, not like Sam, who's a monogamist. Jives with idea that Sam believes he can have lasting relationships while Dean believes that's impossible for them. And yet, Dean pushes Sam toward Sarah in Provenence, when he must know Sam would get attached. He wants so much more for Sam than he even believes is possible. In that way, he's as idealistic as Sam.

Shapeshifer Dean is seriously scary. "Born different. Hideous, hated. Until he learned to become someone else." "All alone, close to no one. All he wants is someone to love him. He's like me. Everybody needs a little human touch every now and then. So hard to be different." What's also scary is how much it relates to Dean. And seeing 'Dean' feeling sorry for himself.

Sam keeps his cool, even knowing the thing's at Rebecca's house.

The shapeshifter as Dean has a more serious demeanor. More intense. No wisecracks. Can be charming, but doesn't joke around.

"The man's walking around with my face. It's a little personal. ... The thought of him driving my car. It's killing me!" Open about his frustration to Sam.

The Rebecca switch is confusing. In her living room with Sam, she looks great for someone who was just tortured the night before. Why didn't that tip him off? And why was she walking down the street alone right after her ordeal, allowing the shapeshifter to nab her? And why isn't she afraid of Dean after what he supposedly did to her? And how does Dean know Sam is at Rebecca's house? *needs more exposition than what was given*

Sam and Dean evenly matched in a fight? They know all each other's moves. (Who cares, though? I love it when they fight!)

Dean freaked at seeing himself dead. Makes a point of stealing back his necklace.

Dean again looking at map. The Navigator.

Sam seems happy with Rebecca knowing his secret. The truth shall set you free.

He might not call for a little while. Beginning to separate from his old life.

Not lonely with his brother around, even though he misses college.

Deep down, Sam never felt that he fit in at college. Like I said, Sam is at this stage where he's learning who he is and where he belongs. That's a hard route, one that's even more difficult when you choose to be truly honest with yourself. At college, Sam was essentially blocking out all the parts of his life that didn't fit into his vision of safe and normal. (Most people do this all the time, one way or another.) Problem is, he had to build a wall of lies to do it, and cut off contact with his family. And still, little things slipped through. His dislike for Halloween. His brother popping in. The ceiling demon. You can only hide from the reality of your life for so long.

One thing that occurred to me, though. He's himself with his brother. Dean knows the truth of his whole life, the college side and the hunting side, and even the lies he's lived with. Dean may be the only one (including his father) who understands. Though I suspect John understands quite a bit as well.
