» Occupation: Artist

» History: Sokar is an ancient earth and fertility god, associated with agriculture and harvests, who came to be associated with Osiris and Ptah by the time of the Middle Kingdom in Egypt. He was said to have been put together by the goddess Shentayet with spices, metals, dates, and precious stones to form an egg and was the original god of the underworld.

He was connected with the god Osiris as his name said to be taken from Osiris's anguished cry to Isis after his death at Set's hands. He is associated with the resurrection of Osiris and was often shown at the entrances of tombs. With being merged with Osiris later, Sokar took on Osiris's life as Seker-Ausar.

There is also a connection with the god Ptah as they are both creators and are combined. In this form, Sokar took Sekhmet as his own consort.

Sokar was a god of Memphis and become a the patron god of artisans. He was the one who made perfumes and foot baths for the deceased, becoming a god of death and the underworld along with Osiris. Sokar was the personification of the underworld and ruled a part of it which was a barren sandy desert. He rode upon this desert in a barque which was pulled by the deceased as a way to improve their chances in the underworld.

He was not a god usually worshiped among the common people but rather was connected with the royal mortuary cult and with transfers or confirmations of kingly power. He was a feared god as well, one of darkness despite his connections with spring and rebirth.

» Reincarnations: Sokar was reborn as Shane Adler in a very small town in the desert of Southern California. Growing up he went to school whenever he felt like it, his parents were never really around much to provide much structure to his life so as soon as he could get away with it, Shane dropped out of school at age 15.

He pretty much sort of figured out how to get along without his parents, entertaining himself by riding his dirt bike into the desert by himself for days. It was were he was most at home. He taught himself about the world, seeing the cycles of life and death in the desert. It was then he started having vague dreams of his life as Sokar but they made little sense to him at the time.

Shane started creating art (mostly drawings as he moved from place to place often and they were the easiest to take with him) as the dreams started. It was an outlet to understand the confusing memories that came the most natural to him. He drifted from place to place, managing to get by with the help of an ability he never knew he had. He just thought he was street smart.

In his early 20's Shane found himself in New York. Though he felt pulled there, he decided to settle down and found a place in a drab, tiny apartment and worked a menial job to pay the bills. His passion was creating art though but it took many years until he could make a living on that as he was particular about what he created and who it went to. Now he's gotten to the point where he can make a decent living off his art though his memories of being Sokar are vague and still slowly coming to him.

» Personality: Sokar is a strange god to understand and that has made him a rather unique individual, full of contradictions.

He loves working with his hands, creating anything. He prefers to work with metals and precious stones, as that is what he was created from as Sokar. He has a restless energy and if he is not at work creating art, he is out and about the city, almost always in motion. He hates having to sit still and he hates sticking to a routine. He also likes putting things together, any kinds of crafting though metal work is what he is best at.

Sokar dislikes being forced into anything or down a certain path. This is why he never takes commissions with his art, he hates being told what to create as well. He creates what he wants to create when he is inspired, often by the strange dreams of his past life as Sokar which results in art that is often dark or even morbid.

He can be outgoing or dark depending on his mood which can change from moment to moment. His temper is terrible, something to be feared, but at the same time he has times where he's oddly cheerful and outgoing. These changes in his mood are unpredictable unless one knows him well to understand why his mood changes.

He is particular with who enjoys his creations, not bothering to cater to what the 'common' people want but instead creates his art with certain purpose to be appreciated by certain people.

Others may not be used to his highs and lows or strange quirks. He can make people uncomfortable as he is blunt with a keen perspective on life and death that can be brutally honest but he has never seen the benefits of not speaking his mind or sugarcoating things. He also has a strong aversion to bad smells and filth, going out of his way to avoid such things.

» Sample Journal: So I've been told this is the place to be. I can't say I buy into this whole 'past life as a god' stuff but ok, I have nothing else to do for the afternoon so lets do this. So...who are you all again?

» Sample Roleplay: It was the same dream which he had been having for the past week, different from his normal dreams. For the last few years Shane had dreamt of dark tombs, gliding across the sands of a realm that was barren, desolate but that was home to him in a way that he had yet to truly understand.

Tonight he was walking through a lush field of wheat under a clear, cloudless sky, feeling the warmth of the midday sun on his skin. He could feel the wheat moving under his fingers as he passed his hand through, it was so real. He had been here before, though a long time ago. This was not the familiar realm of death he had often seen before but even this place evoked a feeling that he had been here, he belonged here just as he belonged in the darkness.

Around him he heard the sounds of the stalks rustling together in the wind, the sounds of workers nearby but he continued on his path, not letting himself be distracted. In the distance he would see stone temples rising above the tops of the wheat, the sound of water, a large river but that's not what he was interested in right now.

There was something he was looking for but in every dream it eluded him causing him to wake up frustrated. It was taunting, in every dream he thought that if he hurried his steps just a little more he would grab it but every time it slipped through his fingers yet again. It felt like someone or something was toying with him every night, showing him a little more each night.

Like every morning, he woke suddenly, the dream vanishing into thin air. He had a name now though, one that resonated unspoken in his mind.

Sokar.
