Was subjected to my first Stan Brakhage stuff tonight. Really interesting. Mothlight was pretty awesome, exhilirating even. His take on film is utterly unique and when the novelty of it passes, the work stands on it's own. I'll be watching the Brakhage anthology with Thomas and Micah.
Also saw my first Deren. I was obviously unable to grasp it's entire meaning in one viewing, but it still made for a beautiful tone poem. It had a really nice rhythm to it and the images were always provoking. Made me want to become more familiar with avant short films.
The audience, as always, was retarded. They laughed throughout and started imitating the humlike score of Meshes of the Afternoon. As me, Micah, Thomas, and Sara noted, they aren't laughing at what they find humourous. Instead they laugh to fill a void, impress others with their acknowlegement of absurdity. Deep down they feel a need to belong to something. That something in this case was the mocking of art, a concept they don't understand.
