Central Station (Salles, 1998) (5/10)
Central Station, suprisingly, had the exact same flaws as the only other Walter Salles film I've seen. It tried too hard to gloss over its subject matter with humor and over done humanity. I really just didn't like the child in the film. He was an asshole for no apparent reason. Sure, his mom died, but if anything else this would make him a more dimensional character. Instead we are forced to sit through the same annoying antics and bad acting for two hours straight. The film's clever premise is squandered by Salles tendency to play down to his audience and revel in cheap sentiment. Overall the scenes with the brothers worked, but not much else.
