At least it had stopped raining. That was about the only thing that could be said so far for life here, Florence thought as she wandered down the streets, still in search of some kind of explanation. Her hopes of actually finding one was dwindling, but she wasn't about to give up just yet.

She caught sight of Scotty and headed over, noting with some amusement the lovely hat he was wearing. "Keeping busy, I see."

He honestly hadn't expected to see anyone else, but he reigns in his surprise, smiling up at her as he leans back on his heels. Okay, so he doesn't look that amazing, but he's a certain amount of fabulous that he thinks he can own, so he decides to just go with it. "I can't stand to eat another canned meal," he tells her very seriously, resuming his process of dropping seeds into the soil. "I thought I'd start a garden -- a community one. Wanna help?" he smiles brightly, looking up from under his hat. "You know you wanna play around in the dirt," he says in a sing-songy voice, laughing softly.

"I can't blame you," Florence said, kneeling down beside him so she could take a better look at the garden. "I can't stand the canned stuff either, but unfortunately cooking is not one of my skills. I'm not sure gardening is either, but I'd be happy to give it a try."

"I've never actually gardened before but I'm not a stranger to manual labor, unfortunately," he comments as he scoots over to continue working on this particular row. "I don't mind being the city's resident chef either. I should probably break into one of these cafes and take over," he says with a smile, sitting back on his heels to smile at her. "How are you doing?" His tone is slightly more serious, genuinely inquiring after her well-being and her integration into city life.

"If you did that, we would all thank you, right after we finished devouring whatever it is you made, assuming we didn't all die from the shock of having something that wasn't canned." Florence poked ineffectually at the dirt for a few moments then leaned over to investigate the empty seed packets.

"I'm doing all right," she answered, turned to look at Scotty. "Considering. How about you?"

He stops digging to give a sigh, letting his shoulders rise and fall before he looks up at her, making a face. "I'm alright. I'm living with Wendla and her friend Anna now. I never thought I'd wind up the guardian of two teenage girls," he chuckles, even if it is a little overwhelming. "I still can't really... Anna and Wendla know each other," he says, giving his head a shake. "Are we all going to have people we know slowly trickle in?"

"I don't know," Florence answered slowly. "Is it terrible of me to hope not? They'd be trapped too, and it just feels wrong." She paused for a moment and laughed wryly. "Of course, I don't know a lot of people so it's probably just as well."

Freddie here... she didn't even want to imagine it. He'd be absolutely miserable with nothing to do and no chessboard in sight. The city wouldn't survive.

Scotty shakes his head. "No, I wouldn't want anyone else to arrive, either," which he is sure of, though he turns more unsure now as he looks away, frowning a little. "But there are people I miss. I wish we had a way to contact people, but if we had that we could leave." He pauses and gives a soft smile, showing that he's alright, really. "Or order take out."

He brushes this moment off because it's not really important, and he reaches for another seed packet. "There isn't anyone you'd miss?" he asks, frowning good-naturedly at her.

"Take out," Florence repeated, visions of delectable chicken and broccoli dancing through her head. "Oh, don't tease me like that. It's not fair. I'll keep thinking about having some all day and I'll get cranky."

Scotty's question took her aback, and she fidgeted with one of the empty seed packets to give her something to focus on while she answered. "I don't have any family," she said finally. "And the closest equivalent I had, I walked out on. It's just me."

His grin at her response to the dream of take out fades as she answers his question, and he sits back on his heels, giving her a sympathetic look. "I've been there. I mean -- I have family but..." He gives his shoulders a shrug and returns to his garden. "I've been on my own a lot, with no one to call even if I could afford a phone." He pauses and gives her a soft smile. "You can have my phone number, if you wanted."

Florence couldn't help but smile at Scotty's offer. What a change he was from other men she'd known. If she'd been ten years younger and other things had been different, then maybe... but that was neither here or there. "That's sweet of you to offer. Thank you."

He gives her another smile, looking up at her from underneath his hat, before he returns to his garden, glancing up occasionally as he talks. "The way I see it is, here, we have to focus on the good things. So, we're stuck here, but there's plenty of shelter, and plenty of clothes. We still have water. We have enough food to last until we can grow some of our own," here he gives her a look as he demonstrates putting a seed into the earth and covering it up. "We could be much worse off in those regards."

"This is very true," Florence nodded in agreement. "It could be much, much worse. We have these things and we have each other."

She picked up the extra shovel and methodically started to dig a hole next to the one Scotty had dug. "We'll get by. I know we will."

"That's the spirit," he says firmly, grinning widely. "So where have you been living lately? Have you found a pair of teenage boys to take in?"

Florence snickered, highly amused. "Perish the thought. I just got finished looking after someone who might have well been one. Having two around would just drive me to the asylum. "I've been living in the place next to the church - when the electricity works."

OOC: WHAT I DO NOT REMEMBER GETTING THIS NOTIFICATION

"Girls then. They're really nice to have around, actually. They clean and cook and don't leave messes, though maybe that's because they're from the 1800s." He grins and knocks the dirt off his gloves, sitting back on his heels. "Ugh, the electricity. Don't remind me. I try not to think about it. The only upside I can think of in that regard is that at least we don't have to worry about our carbon footprint."
