Character: Hawk
Fandom/Series: Seiken Densetsu 3
Original or Alternate Universe: Original
Canon Used: Game (Seiken Densetsu 3)
Age: 17
Gender: Male
Species: Human
Appearance: Hawk stands at about 175cm tall, with average weight. He has fairly tanned skin (possibly slightly lighter under his clothes), long purple hair tied back in a ponytail, and yellow-brown eyes. He’s generally wearing a brown tunic tied with a purple sash, purple leggings, brown boots, wristbands, and a headband.
Personality: Hawk generally comes across as fairly cheerful and outgoing person who likes a laugh, with fairly clear judgement, and a bit of a flirt. He’s a fairly sharp individual, who’s grown up learning that he needs to notice things and take any advantage that there is. At times, Hawk could come across as overconfident, but Hawk feels strongly that he’s good enough at what he does to warrant being confident about it, even when interrupted midstream. He’ll choose to run with that and integrate it into what he was doing/saying. Besides, if you don’t have confidence in your own bluff, it can be hard for other people to believe in the bluff. Hawk is fairly at ease with lying if the situation requires, but equally happy to work with the truth if it’s there. He prefers to project the image that he is in control in most situations, so someone would have to push hard or threaten those dear to him to get a reaction for long. Isabella/Bigieu is one of the few people Hawk’s really had much rage over that’s lasted more than a day or two.
Hawk’s also capable of working well in a team- the raid we see him on involves four people in the execution. He would be capable of working on his own, but most of his experience has been with at least one other person, and it’s something he’s comfortable with. It’s also that his friends are important to him- he uses the flats of his blade to snap Eagle out of hypnosis and lets Isabella go where killing her would’ve also killed Jessica. This could also be considered one of his weak points- he’s reluctant to kill close friends trying to kill him under a spell of hypnosis, and reluctant to take action when those actions meant Jessica would die because of those actions, even when Isabella/Bigieu would be dead.
As a thief, he sees nothing wrong with stealing from people who deserve it- rich people who haven’t really worked for what they have- though he would object to being stolen from, because hey, he worked to steal that stuff, and someone else shouldn’t be able to just take that away from him. Also that sort of thing is bad when on an Important Quest. …though really, Hawk is less worried about the decrease in Mana when compared to getting the cursed necklace off Jessica/getting Jessica away safely. Personal offences and offences against friends are also something to seek reparation for. People who aren’t causing trouble aren’t as much of a problem, though, and he can recognise when it’s better not to make trouble and is reasonably good at sneaking through areas.
He likes to have some movement going- he thinks better when he’s on the move at least a little, even if it’s just tapping one foot. Besides, appropriate movements make a grand statement more dramatic.
Strengths/Abilities: Hawk’s physical strength is about average; his greatest strength is his speed and agility. He wields two daggers, dealing average damage.
Class: Ninja
Abilities:
-Shuriken: Hawk throws three shuriken at a single enemy, lowering hit/evasion.
-Earth Jutsu: A sand trap appears below a single foe for a short time, dealing basic earth damage and lowering hit/evasion.
-Air Jutsu: Lightning hits a single foe to deal basic air damage and lower defence.
-Water Jutsu: Water pours down on an enemy, dealing basic water damage and lowering attack.
-Fire Jutsu: Flame envelope an enemy, dealing basic fire damage and lowering magic abilities.
Weaknesses: Hawk’s essentially human, so Hawk has pretty much the same weaknesses as any human.
History: Hawk grew up as part of the Navarre Thieves Guild, a group of thieves (and ninjas) who steal from the rich lead by Lord Flamekhan. He had a number of friends within the guild during this time, including Flamekhan’s children Eagle and Jessica, and brothers not related to Flamekhan Bill and Ben and former merchant cat Nikita, though he seems to have been closest to Eagle and Jessica.
One night, after a raid in Sultan (Navarre’s major city), Hawk returned to the guild to find that an announcement had been made that the Guild was now to become the Navarre Kingdom, and to invade the Wind Kingdom of Rolante to build a new base there. Jessica talked to him afterwards, saying that there was good reason for the decision, since the desert’s oases were drying up, but Hawk snapped at her, saying that she was just excited about becoming a princess. At that, Jessica slapped him and left. Hawk stayed for a bit, then went to find Eagle. Both of them agreed that something seemed wrong with Flamekhan, and went to Flamekhan’s room to investigate. Isabella was talking to an unknown man with pale skin and red eyes, and Flamekhan didn’t seem to be paying attention at all. Hawk and Eagle confronted Isabella, who cast a spell on Eagle to control him and made him fight Hawk. Hawk snapped Eagle out of it by using the flats of his blades, but Isabella killed Eagle with another spell and summoned the guards, whereupon Hawk was thrown in jail.
Isabella visited him in jail, to tell him that she had placed a cursed necklace on Jessica that would kill her if Hawk told her the truth, leaving him unable to talk about what had really happened when Jessica came to visit. He was eventually busted out when Nikita bombed open a cracked wall at the back of the jail. Nikita told Hawk that, though he didn’t know of a way to remove the necklace, but possibly the Priest of Light in Wendel might. With that information, Hawk set off for Wendel, taking passage on a ship from Sultan to Jad, the closest port.
Jad was taken over by Beastmen by the time Hawk got there, however. He slipped past at night, and headed for the cave leading to Wendel, on the way encountering others heading for Wendel, like Angela, the princess of Altena who was looking for a way to learn magic, Kevin of the Beast Kingdom seeking a way to revive his dead friend (a wolf pup called Karl), Duran from the Kingdom of Forcena who sought strength, Lise from Rolante seeking a way to win back her kingdom, Carlie the Priest of Light’s granddaughter, and a faerie who needed to warn the Priest about the deterioration of the Mana Tree and Man. The Priest of Light told them that he did not know a way to fulfil any desires, except perhaps the faerie’s- if they gathered all the Mana spirits, of which there were eight, travelled to the Mana Holyland, and drew the Mana Sword before the Tree withered away completely, they might stand a chance of reversing the disappearance of Mana and perhaps even have their wishes fulfilled by the Goddess of Mana.
The group sought the Spirit of Light first, since it had been sighted in the cave near Wendel and was thus the closest. This involved defeating a giant crab, but that wasn’t too much trouble. The troublesome part was really when they were captured by beastmen on the way back, and jailed in Jad. Fortunately, the guard was easily distracted, and the group caught a ship out of there to Maia, from where they intended to travel to Forcena’s capital. Unfortunately, Altenan forces blew up the bridge between Maia and Forcena, so they had to travel by cannon and find the gunpowder for the cannon, through which they also managed to find the Earth Spirit Gnome. They got to Forcena and found themselves in the middle of an invasion, which they managed to foil, and got information about the location of the Wind Spirit.
Since the Wind Spirit was in part of the Wind Kingdom, this involved freeing the country from the Navarre invaders, all of who were under Isabella’s control at that point. The group fought their way up to the top of the castle, where they had to fight Hawk’s old friends Bill and Ben, and where Isabella revealed herself as Bigieu, and working for the Dark Prince. Hawk took out his daggers to take revenge for Eagle, but Bigieu reminded him of the cursed necklace, and Hawk stopped. The group then went to the port to catch a shop back to Maia, but it turned out to be a ghost ship. Angela was turned into a ghost, and the others had to defeat the spirit in control of the ship to free her and thereby the Spirit of Darkness- and the ship. The group ended up on a volcanic island, and went looking for a seafaring turtle to take them away before the volcano erupted. The turtle got them to Maia and they went to see King Richard again, who told them where the other four Spirits could be found.
Their next destination was Altena, which was freezing cold, but reasonably uneventful except for running into the Dark Knight, who left them with three robots to fight. After that, they headed for the Valley of Flames in Navarre, and found Bigieu, Jessica- sans necklace, at this point- and Bill and Ben. Bigieu hustled Jessica into the valley, leaving Bill and Ben to fight the group. In this fight, Bill and Ben died, adding another mark against Bigieu. Hawk hurried after Bigieu, intent on stopping her from doing anything to Jessica, but was snatched at the moment of stepping into the Valley of Flames.
Between Luministi Season One and Season Two:
Hawk and the rest of the group chased Bigieu into the Valley of Flames, but at the bridge just before the Stone Bigieu stopped them, threatening to kill Jessica if they took one step further. However, Nikita, who’d followed the group, threw a dart and startled Bigieu into dropping Jessica and leaving. Nikita promised to look after Jessica, heading away while the group went after Bigieu. They were unable to stop Bigieu from unsealing the Fire Mana Stone- she used Bill and Ben’s souls to do that- but Salamander joined them, and they went off in search of Luna in the Moonlit Forest and Dryad in the Lampflower Forest.
With all eight spirits with them, the group then headed to the Isle of Oblivion to open the portal to the Holyland. It failed the first time, and succeeded on the second- but rose into the sky, and the faerie realised that for that to happen, the Mana Stones’ energies must have been released. The group were knocked out by an attack from the first group of foes to go through, and had to make their own way up once they woke up by finding the Father Daughter of the Winged Ones, a white dragon, in Rolante. There was evidence that the three groups had arrived before them, but Hawk and the others remained mostly unhindered while making their way to the Mana Tree- even, it seemed, as Hawk reached out to try to draw the Sword of Mana.
Canon Point: Heading to the Fire Mana Stone, post-Bill-and-Ben fight pre-Jessica-on-a-bridge. Trying to draw the Sword of Mana.
First Person Sample:
[the sudden drop in temperature startles Hawk, and he brings his daggers up in defence. Seeing that there’s nothing other than the projection of a man, he relaxes, but not by much- he’s still tense as he walks over to the vidscreen and touches it.] It’s not a real person… Could it be like the illusion in the Cleft of Earth? [he starts checking the rest of the room for anything strange that could produce something like that- but since he’s not familiar with anything here, he’s not really coming up with anything useful. He’s listening to what the mayor’s saying, as well, and it doesn’t make any sense.
[When the message ends, Hawk speaks, because this is truly frustrating.] You don’t have the time to come here and attend to my concerns in person, you say? [not that he regrets not seeing the mayor in person that much, but he’s annoyed, and lifting something off the man might help.] But you’ve taken me from important business of my own- a matter of life and death, even- [he throws a hand forward to accentuate this point] and you can’t tell me this face to face? [he makes a dismissive gesture, by which time the mayor’s image has already disappeared.] …chh! Illusions. [scowls, and tucks a lock of hair behind one ear before going to investigate the rest of the house. Muttering:] Where is this Luministi, anyway?
[the house is very nice, but Hawk’s not really in a mood where he can appreciate it, and from a quick look a lot of it seems too nice. The bike puzzles him, and he spends a few minutes considering it before giving one wheel and spin and moving on to the welcome basket. The packeted goods go into a pocket somewhere, though not the chocolates, and Hawk picks up an orange.] I haven’t seen one of these for ages- not since the wells started drying up. And they were always difficult to grow before that. I’ve heard they used to be a little easier, but that was a long time ago. [he considers it for a moment, then sits down and starts peeling it, before cutting it into pieces and eating one. It’s… good. Better than the last one he had, at least.] Well, at least they seem to be looking after us, despite the reception. Let’s see what else they have. [goes back to the welcome basket]
A map? [that goes into a pocket, too, and he moves on to the coupons] These get you free things in town, huh? Might be worth looking into. [tucks those away, and sits down to check out the rest of the basket before heading out into town]
Third Person Sample:
Hawk was used to the desert. It was where he’d grown up, after all, though he would have said that it had been much nicer when he’d been a child, and for more reasons than the usual fog of nostalgia some people got. The fruit had been nicer, for one, and they’d had more of it. The Guild had even had a small orchard of its own, after a fashion. He’d spent a lot of time climbing in the trees then, with Eagle and Jessica, and they’d all had torn clothes several times. Jessica’s clothes had caused the most disappointment, but Hawk had always felt the adults were disappointed in him and Eagle as well- one of the tests to prove they could work as part of the Guild involved getting past a maze of bushes without snagging clothes on the bushes, and while it wasn’t an automatic failure, it did lose them points. Nikita hadn’t liked the trees so much, but then he’d arrived at the Guild later, and Hawk suspected that he was at least five- or possibly even ten- years older than them. The wells had begun drying up by then, too, and they’d grown too old to be spending as much time playing. And now nobody was playing at all- but if the Guild was really going to war, that might have been for the best. Hawk wasn’t sorry he wouldn’t be a part of that, though. He was a thief, not a soldier.
Since leaving, he’d seen a lot of the world that was unlike Navarre’s sand. Hawk thought that this was probably a good thing, when he considered that as part of this journey they were headed for one of the places as least like Navarre as they could get on this world. He wasn’t sure how much precipitation Altena got, though, in the form of snow or otherwise, and it didn’t look as though it would be any easier to grow things in the snow. Maybe if it warmed up on this side of the world a little, it would be easier to grow plants. He would certainly have appreciated an increase in temperature, as opposed to having to buy any set of clothes he was certain to discard once they returned to a more pleasant climate. He wasn’t the only one, either, the rest of the group making their own purchases, and he wondered if it was possible to sell the clothes back to one of the merchants when they were done.
On the other hand, they were bound to run into monsters along their way to the Mana Stone here, and- if they were exceptionally unlucky, and Hawk really hoped they’d used up all their bad luck on the Ghost Ship and Bucca Island, some of the Altenan forces. None of them could evade every attack, and that meant they were likely to come out with a fair amount of damage to the clothes. Hawk didn’t know of a single merchant who was willing to buy damaged goods for anything like a decent price. He was probably going to be better off trying to burn them to warm up before leaving.
