I'm finally up-to-date with what's been going on on LJ and I'm more than a little irritated. Whether my journal was one of those shut down for a time is unknown as I haven't done much with LJ in the past week or so. However, I did read some things from the "Warriors of Innocence" or whatever the hell they call themselves.
I can't stand the idea of pedophilia, incest, child rape (or rape of any kind, really) and all that in real life. I don't particularly like reading about it either. If I can help it I avoid those fics, although on occasion I find one that is just so well written that it bypasses my squirming brain's initial reaction. Somewhat. I still squirm about it. But STILL.
Just because people read these things or write them does NOT make them pedophiles. I like reading murder mysteries and Silence of the Lambs, does that make me sick and twisted for finding a serial killer that ingenius fascinating? My mother seems to think so. But it doesn't mean I'm going to become his next copycat. Just because I like reading about it doesn't mean I like doing it or even the real act. If so, what about all those slasher movies? They're immensely popular but that doesn't make every single person watching them a killer, now does it.
I cannot be alone in thinking this.
Yes, pedophilia needs to be taken care of, and any and all sexual offenders should be put into that category (like those websites for adults rallying for their "love of children" wishing to legalize pedophilia that makes me want to vomit).
We aren't pedophiles. Yes, I like the Prince of Tennis characters, and yes, they are all under fifteen. (I try not to think about it because let's face it, they aren't drawn to look that age now are they). I like the Kakashi/Sakura fandom in Naruto and I suppose that could be seen as pedophilia (sort of, if Sakura is being written as younger than 18 or whatever age it is that makes it so). Yes I like reading stories about them getting together and doing whatever. That does not make me a pedophile.
I reiterate: I cannot be alone here.
If LJ is being targeted, what about any other book where a character has been given a history that includes pedophilia, rape, incest, whatever? Books are just as accessible, if not more so, than the Internet, and by association, LiveJournal. Should all of those published works suddenly be taken off the market because of the questionable content? Should those authors be taken aside for questioning, or just thrown in jail without any further incentive?
They haven't done it yet, that's for sure.
Perhaps only fellow writers would understand, and that could be part of the problem. If you don't write, you don't understand the mindset of a writer.
Same as people thinking that first person stories are written in the author's point of view. The author's thoughts, past, personality and perspectives. No. It does not. It is the character, not the author, telling the story. The author does not necessarily share these views, he or she quite possibly completely disagrees.
As I've read others saying... These "Warriors" need to be smacked with a clue-by-four.
this is my opinion and i'm sticking to it. so there.
