today is monumental: instruction, done. japanese 1a, done.
[Music as a Kid]
1. What is your earliest memory involving music? singing songs like "that's amore" and "help" with my parents, mostly my dad. we used to all sing a lot together.
2. What kind of music did your parents listen to? my dad listens to bob dylan and the rolling stones and eric anderson *shudder* and arlo guthrie and stuff like that (mostly)...my mom listens to more poppy stuff, like the beatles and motown and bnl, and her fav band is del amitri
3. Is this the same music you grew up listening to? more or less, minus the more contemporary things my mom likes (cuz she also like simon and garfunkel and rickie lee jones and stff)
4. What music was popular when you were a kid? at harding, it was all about r&b (and some rap, but not so much). tlc and swv and janet jackson and shit
5. Did you ever parade around the house as a particular musician? no, i was a DANCER!
6. Do you remember your first favourite song? besides like kiddie songs i don't remember..."weak" by swv. the day care/camp i went to would sing it together on walks back from the pool. haha awesome.
[Music as an Adolescent]
1. What music were/are you into in high school? i started out on the poppy side, since that's what my initial group of friends listened to, but then got more into green day and the neo-pop-punk scene (fat wreck chords, warped tour bands, etc) hella a lot for a while, but then it calmed down a bit
2. Did/Do you have a graduation theme song? our senior prom theme was "at last" so that song [by etta james] was kinda it, i suppose. (*nods along with patrick's answer*)
3. Is there a song that got you through a lot of the petty drama in high school? not too much drama in the high school days
4. What music was/is popular in your school/scene? school: rap and r&b, duh. i wasn't in a scene, unless you count "people that don't fit in with any other group at school" a scene. plus, we listened to whatever we want (think of the musical tastes of me, jennifer, christine, ellen, jessie, etc. cuz that's who we were!)
5. Were/Are you in any bands/rap groups/singing-songwriting-projects in high school? (What genre of music did/do you play?) i did my own stuff on keyboard and guitar, and was in a few bands that failed fairly quickly, like heroes with helmets (haha fuck YES!) and get off the internet (1 show, baby!)
6. What did/do your relatives think of your musical tastes, if they know of them? if by relatives you mean parents...my dad tries to be cool and like what i like, and my mom likes the prettier stuff...and they HELLA like it better than my brother's (rap)!
[Music Now]
1. What are your top five favourite bands/artists? in no particular order: everyday victory, divit, green day, good charlotte, and the starting line (probably...i'm not sure, there are so many!)
2. What are your top favourite genres of music? um, these are totally arbitrary, but: pop-punk, power pop, emo, SOME melodic hardcore, pop rock...yeah a bunch more.
3. Why do you like these genres? Any particular influences by friends/family? i like em cuz after all the musical perusing i've done, this is where i've found the stuff that is the best. i like the melodies and the power and the words and everything. the stuff i like influenced by family...like motown and old rock and stuff...as for friends? just about everything, although specific bands are my doing
4. Are you in any bands right now? What genre of music do you play? no
5. Is the music you like right now similar to what you liked five years ago? 5 years ago..that would be 9th grade? um, no. almost not at all. back then, i liked more mainstream stuff, and the stuff i like now i probably would have thought was too "loud" or "crazy" like i did blink 182's dude ranch (haha, seriously). although that was about my transitioning stage, too.
6. What is your current favourite song(s)? "this is where i cross my fingers (summer song)" -- the crush
[Your Scene]
1. Do people who listen to your genre of music act/dress a certain way? If yes, how? i dunno. i don't dress like the pre-pubescent girls that like gc, and i don't dress all that much like indie or emo kids. i'm kinda just...there. all the "looks" of those genres are too intense and expensive for me haha
2. Do you believe that you can tell what musical genre a person pretty much from how they act/dress? frequently, but not always
3. Do you act/dress like the people in your scene, given that they dress or act in certain ways? not really. if i do, it's in a really toned down way
4. Do you like the people in your scene? not really, since all the girls are catty and bitchy, or pre-pubescent (depends on the music), and all the guys are...whatever.
5. Your thoughts on scenes and their labels? trying too goddamn hard
6. If you could explore and be fully knowledgeable about a particular scene for one day, which would it be? i'd like to delve into the world of the "scene kids" (general description) and see what the fuck is they're problem and then write a KICK ASS psych paper! haha
[Comments on Categories(at least on the ones you know about)]
1. Nu Metal: i like it more than most people i know. like i like linkin park. fuck you all. but most of the rest of it sucks ass.
2. Pop Country: so fucking undeniably catchy, but also irritating, cuz the "country" part that they have pride in is like the republican-hick part of the world. if it wasn't there, i'd like it a lot more.
3. Pop Punk: i fucking love (most of) it. people talk about how it's generic, but seriously, not everyone can do it, i don't care what you say. i love music that's catchy, and bands like nfg and the starting line...catchy and beautiful lyrics and fun!
4. Old Punk: i like stuff like the clash, but most of it...eh. revoluntionary, but kinda just noise at the same time
5. Gangsta Rap: by putting in "gangsta", it's the stuff i hate. the violent shit. rap in theory i like, but i don't like the messages, and find most of it redundant (as i suppose with any genre)
6. Pop/Pop Rock: yay! so much fun! i love it!
7. Death Metal: i don't know whether to be scared or amused.
8. Hardcore/Screamo: some of it, as long as it's cool or has some sort of melody or something (like thursday and stuff)
9. Altpop/Alternative: yay again! there's nothing wrong with mainstream!
10. Classic Rock: i don't know exactly what is meant by this category. i like some old rock n' roll. but not like "classic rock" like creedence clearwater revival and shit like the eagles haha (actually, i kinda like some of it. i should shut up)
11. Emo: in theory, probably my favorite. but some of it sux, cuz that's what happens when a genre gets popular
12. Oldies: *drools* it makes me feel good.
13. Hip Hop/R&B: like i said, i like it in theory, just not in the way it's currently practiced (or at least at the mainstream level). i do like people like outkast though. good shit. and i'm a sucker for r&b, since it's my childhood.
14. Indie: not really my thing. a little too above my head, i bet...unless it's catchy. then i like it.
15. New Wave/Synth: fun, but not my first choice
16. Trance/Dance/Electronica: fun in small doses, but none of that shit like where clubs only play the one type.
17. Classical: some of it's cool, some not. same as most. i don't know too much. i agree with patrick, though, when he plugged chopin.
18. Folk: okay, but gets old fast
19. Jazz: i like the classics, but the modern jazz sounds like shit to me
20. Foreign/Anything: slovene punk rock! yeah! zablujena generacija! and like bollywood music! i fucking love music like from K3G and monsoon wedding!

6. Women in music... what's the deal? women are just made too much to sell themselves and not their music. like NO women are making music that are like not attractive...i think everyone should be like fucking melissa ethridge or someone who isn't selling their image (just their lesbianism haha jk) actually now i realize it's true, the only ones gettin RESPECT are the lesbians (think lillith fair), and that's not fair.
