As a linguist I'm not so sure I agree with these distinctions (or how they differentiated between them), but here goes nothing:

If you're really interested in variants of American English, try visiting the great Pop vs. Soda Controversy. In my own experience, most Illinoisians say "pop," except those in Southern Illinois and the City of Chicago. Am I right or what?
