In which I extol on the flavor of Japanese apples, and other immediate thoughts

As far back as I can remember, at least since the age of four, I remember hating apples. I adored apple juice, had seasonal affairs with apple cider, but Mott's apple sauce was the closest I coulde come to liking a solid apple. Carmel apples, no. I even refused to try apple pie until uni, believing I'd just hate that too (though I as biased against ( Read more... )

There are so many different kinds of apples out there. I never knew until I went to Australia and discovered the joys of the giant fresh produce market. I tried well over a dozen different varieties and discovered that Pink Lady apples were the best things I had ever tasted. I would buy them every week, along with a kilo of kumquats. And I was like you, I NEVER ate apples when I was little and I don't like the taste of apples I've had in America. But oh, those Pink Ladies... not even the giant Japanese apples can compare.

You know, a lifelong battle of mine has been convincing myself to go to things that I know will be fun, but that require getting up and leaving the house and talking to people. Maybe it's my introverted personality, but even after so much life experience, I still have this striong instinct to stay home and not go out. And I'm sure if you're starting to get a cold, it's even worse. But it's so funny, that literally 95% of the time, obsess as I might about whether I should go or not (Like Cameron in "Ferris Bueller's Day Off"), I do end up having fun. Just my $0.02, of course, but I do totally know how you feel.

While I have never heard of apples such as you describe that doesn't necessarily mean that they don't exist somewhere in the states. My experience with fresh produce in general, though, is that you are far more likely to get tasty (and interesting) produce from a farmer's market than from your grocery store (for obvious enough reasons). As a super extra bonus, if you go often enough the farmers come to recognize you and will give you discounts and advice (ie. "The pomelos are still a little sour this week, they've only just started to come into season - the season peak isn't for a month.").

Also, agreed on there being many many many varieties of apples. In the right season I think I saw something like 25 varieties from a single farmer. There are apparently even apples that are red *inside*. o.O
