The Shining????

I made the mistake of watching The Shining this weekend. My younger daughter is really into acting (she's in a dramatic arts program at school) and I thought, well, you know, it's a classic in the horror genre and all. When I saw it all those years ago I remember wondering what all the fuss was about, but I thought maybe that was just me not getting it or something since everyone always goes, oooooooh, the Shining, what a classic, yada yada...

Well, ohmygod, that is one bad movie. Bad. Nothing good about it. It's boring, not scary, and the acting is atrocious. I've always found Jack Nickolson over-rated -- and his idiotic over-the-top performance is the best of the whole cast. The acting is so bad it makes me wonder whether the director made them read their lines that way to achieve some sore of dramatic effect. Speaking of the direction, it is terrrrrrrible. Those stiff scenes on the telephone are the worst. And pointless. Did I mention pointless? The plot barely holds together. There doesn't seem to be any reason why all these bad things are happening, and the final shot of the main character in an old black and white picture from the 1920s just seems gratuitous and entirely nonsense.

Now, if you are looking for a good horror movie, you might want to try My Soul to Keep (at least, I think that's what it's called).  It's out in video now. It's by Wes Craven (is that how you spell his name?) so, yaknow, it's not deep or anything. The acting won't (didn't) win any Oscars. But it keeps you on your toes from start to finish. Nice and twisty throughout. Some nice bits of dialogue too. I was pretty surprised that it turned out so well because IMDB only gave it 4.2 out of 10.
