Record Store

Today is
National Record Store day. Thanks to Chelsea for reminding me yesterday on it. It was created two years ago by the founder of Bull Moose Records an independent record store based out of Maine. The stores that are participating (see website) have free stuff for the people that arrive early and they are offering limited-released CDs and vinyl for today.

I don't know how much longer record stores will be around. I know Newbury Comics (that sells more records than comics) makes more money from selling DVDs and assorted stuff than from CD sales. I have mixed feelings about it. I always felt that record stores should serve a niche customer-based. There should be jazz music stores, punk music stores, soundtrack film music stores etc. Then when a customer arrives not having a clue what a title or artist a song is from they can hum a few bars and the record store employee would be able to spot it. The last time there was a store I could do that was at the Tower Records in Burlington. They had an amazing classical music department and there was just one guy that worked that department. That guy knew everything. You can't get that from iTunes anymore... Please... iTunes is probably the worst place to look for music. It's like walking into a record store and only being provided the top 20 albums of a certain format. They should have a live chat section where you can ask an iTunes sales person for help. They should also add a friend's section (like in Netflix) so you can see what your friends are buying.

Speaking of Netflix last night I watched
The Cutting Edge: The Magic of Movie Editing. It was a documentary on film editors and the concept of film editing. I had no clue how important it is. It was interesting that the majority of film editors in the silent film era were women. It was felt editing was like knitting. Then talkies came out and men got more involved. There are still a ton of amazing female editors today. It was also interesting that a lot of actors can be made to appear to be better actors by the editor. If you are into the theory of films I highly suggest you to watch it.
