I always feel bad when my first internal reaction to hearing some bad news about the Near East is not thinking of the poor people, but about the destruction of cultural treasures, sites, and monuments and our work. It never lasts long, dissolves at the latest with the casualty reports, but it's there. And we share this notion of 'If they have to bash their hears in, can't they do it someplace they don't bother other people?'
Not random at all. There was a bomb attack in Beiruth just a couple of days ago, which is were we are supposed to arrive in Lebanon. And some idiots blew up the two minarets of the Golden Dome in Baghdad, and with that didn't only destroy a shrine and feed the vicious circle of attack and counter attack that's already been going on for way too long, but also destroyed a culturally important, beautiful building.
