Rock im Park Day Two (the one with the shiniest bands)

Jun 09, 2007 11:24

Saturday

No freezing that night. But again with the waking up from the stifling heat. Gah. And at noon the sun disappeared again. But at least we only had the occasional short drizzle that day. Oh, and did you know that there's nothing to do on a festival before performances start? Nothing! Still, this was the most important day of the festival. See:

1.55 Little Man Tate AS
2.55 The Used CS
4.05 The Hives CS
5.35 Billy Talent CS
8.15 My Chemical Romance AS
9.35 Arctic Monkeys AS
11.00 The White Stripes AS

Little Man Tate

Never heard before. We just went because we had nothing else to do and I thought the name sounded funny. Relatively young little indie band from England. Yeah. Nothing more to tell. Okay, but not special.

The Used

Alternative Rock from the US. I have the one album (or rather Tabea has, I just held out my mp3 player and said pretty please. I don't really buy a lot of CDs anymore. I guess once a year sums it up. And it's not that I download instead. I just get stuff from Tabea (who does buy CDs), and occasionally from the sister (who acquires songs in a way I am not sure is completely legal). Not really liking it that much, but it's okay, and it is rumoured that one song, Pretty Handsome Awkward, from the new album Lies for the Liars is about My Chemical Romance front man Gerard (he and Used-front man Bert were best buddies back when they were both taking drugs. Now Gerard is clean and Bert doesn't like him anymore).

The Hives

Surprise of the day! Swedish band producing punky garage rock songs (says wiki), clad in matching black and white suits. Pretty successful as of late. A little more mainstreamy than others, says I. But very entertaining. And *looks left* *looks right* *whispers* Cute. Yes, cute. I know that is no word you use to describe a rock band, but it's true! Imagine coming from The Used and their using 'fuck' or 'fucking' at least twice in every sentence, and then seeing a nice young man in a black suit and hearing him mangle German to tell you that 'I know, now you are all Hives fans!', 'You love us', and what else. Unfortunately I don't have the latest album Tyrannosaurus Hives, but only Veni Vidi Vicious (meaning neither Tabea nor the sister have it), so you won't get Walk Idiot Walk or To Time and Touch and Broken Bones, which are newer hits.

Billy Talent

Canadian Rock band. One of my three favourite bands. *dances around happily* Pretty successful in Canada (five times platinum), moderate success in the US, and with the second album pretty successful in Germany, too (No 1 of the album charts, 2007 ECHO Awards for Best Newcomer International and Best Rock/Alternative International). I still liked the first one better. Tabea too. *mopes* First time I saw them live, and I was not disappointed. Great live performance, carried-away audience, and! They played as many songs from the first album as from the second one! Of course all those heathens in the audience only sang along to the new songs, but they did play the older ones, too! *loffs them for that* Definitely need to see them again. Rose-tinted glasses aside, they will be co-headliner at Rock am See which takes place in my hometown (where the family and Tabea live), so should I for some reason not be in Lebanon on September 1, I'll go there.*nods*

My Chemical Romance

And don't you go throwing RPF at me, Tabea. I don't read that stuff, no matter how good-looking the boys are. And I don't care that you usually don't read it either, but are making an exception for MCR and Fall Out Boy. US band, alternative rock, emo. Another one of my favourite bands, also first time to see them live. Remember, most important day of the festival… Three published albums, mainstream success came with the second one, and the third is the one that made them popular in Germany. Me, I liked the second one best, followed by the first, and then the third. Their style changes a lot from album to album. I didn't enjoy their show as much as Billy Talent's for two reasons: First, they played almost exclusively songs from the new album, The Black Parade. Yes, yes, I know, new album, most successful one, majority of the audience knows the lyrics. But I still would have loved to hear more of the older songs. And second, the show wasn't as good as I expected it to be. Oh, they played great. But MCR performances usually are more like shows, for example they used to enact the clip to Helena (their clips are great). I do realize that on a festival stage they only have limited options, but still, I'd have liked to see more. Guess I'll have to wait with watching an actual show till they are on tour somewhere in my part of the world. Oh, I have all three albums, but you get youtube links (but could upload songs too, if anyone's interested). I just love their videos.

I'm Not Okay Watch this one. If you don't listen to no single one of these songs, I don't care as long as you watch this. It's fantastic. It'll leave you sitting there saying 'So when's the movie coming out?' Might be my favourite video ever.
The Ghost Of You
Welcome To The Black Parade
I Don't Love You

And because I mentioned them above, even if they weren't at RiP: Number three of my favourite bands would be Fall Out Boy

Mh, you could compare them to MCR. They are even friends! Which is were the bad bad RPF comes from. Wiki says: While widely considered to be an alternative rock band, Fall Out Boy is often described as pop punk and emo. By their own admission, their music has elements of pop and punk, but is not pop punk. They have also stated that they are not an emo band. *shrugs* I would have called them emo. I only have one of four albums, unfortunately. Tabea hasn't bought any more. Yet.

Arctic Monkeys

English (and you can clearly hear it in the vocals) indie rock punk… ahem… I can't for the life of me remember how that one was. … Tabea likes them more than I do. …Have a song?

When The Sun Goes Down

The White Stripes

US indie/blues/garage rock band consisting out of Jack and Meg White. They say they are siblings, but are a divorced couple. Weird. I liked them live better than on record. Way better. He (being the singer) sounded nice, and asked things like 'Are you cold down there?'. And there seemed to be more use of the guitar than in the records.

It took us about half an hour to get back to our tent because the area between AS and CS was so crowded. But by then we were tired enough to fall asleep almost immediately!

Day Three yet to come.

Btw, has no one updated in the last 20 hours or is lj just not showing me anything new?
