This morning when I was flipping thru latest issue of Collezioni Uomo at Eslite's magazine workstation, a lady went up to the counter alongside me with an enquiry in English.
"Excuse me, do you have a magazine here called 'The Face'??"
The guy working behind the counter didn't utter a word but dived back behind his computer keyboard instead. I figured the best thing he could come up with after consulting the database would be something along the lines of 'sorry, I don't see anything in our computer', so I decided to break the sorta sorrowful news to the lady that the magazine folded back in May.
"...Really?? But it's such a great magazine!!" The lady looked devastated. This I wouldn't know... If it was really great, then it wouldn't have to fold. She went on: "Do you think so?? Did you read the magazine??" I kinda nodded, though it's more or less a lie. I used to read magazines, esp "The Face" back in the 80's, but later in the 90's until now basically I stopped.
The lady went on asking me: "You seem to like magazines very much to know such news. What's your favourite magazine??" Uh-oh, this one really got me. After a few seconds of dumbfounded silence, I said:
"I don't have any favourite magazine right now."
But that's sorta pathetic... To be a mad magazine-goer like I am, it's somehow an inexcusable answer. So much for the asking?? On my way to work I kept on thinking about it. I still wouldn't know what to say...
