1408!!

Saw "1408" on Sunday night. Thank gosh it's not really scary, though it indeed is a bit disturbing. If the director Mikael "Ondskan" Håfström and script writers really worked at it, it could well be a new masterpiece, but too bad I guess it's just wishful thinking on our part...

When I saw the movie poster, I thought it was a historical epic about life on the sea. XD Well, "1408" is (yet another) Stephen King short story adaptation. "Even if you leave this room, you can never leave this room!!" Now what does that tell you...

I gotta say that the movie do remind me of so many other ones when actually it could have been really original. Just to name a few that came to mind: Roman Polanski's "The Tenant" (once reviewed here in my LJ), Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining", and yes, the little girl bits reminded me of "Silent Hill". Also, some of the atmosphere also reminded me so much of "Barton Fink", esp the fire + the theme, if it's indeed about personal hell for whoever chose to enter the room.

Clever or boring?? The fact that 1408 = 13... -__-;;;

This is what I call a "The Tenant" moment:

And this is probably the "Silent Hill" moment!!

Ppl who think a particular sequence in "1408" with a man in the opposite building is madly creepy should really really try "The Tenant", which to me is probably one of the @$^@(*_!# movies ever!!

"1408" may become instantly better if some of the usual cheap cheesy scares here + there could be edited out. Don't they get it by now that silent BGM could also be more suspenseful?? Take any Michael Haneke movies for example. Without any deliberate BGM things would seem more real and really leave you cold in the dead of the night when you suddenly wake up in bed for no reason.

Anyhow I'm glad the plot is pretty interesting in itself and that it comes with an interesting ending too, which could keep you thinking ages after seeing it. A more or less 7 out of 10.
