It's late and I really have to get to bed, but I promised some people that I'd post at least some photos tonight (which is now early hours of the morning)...
And I really have to indulge in a little squeeful rambling about something Joe Flanigan said during his Q&A session today.
friendshipper you really have to READ THIS NOW!
Because you know what we've said about how we love the way that Sheppard is so emotionally repressed and yet you can see the fact that he cares deeply about his friends, even though he tries to hide it? And you know what you once said about worrying that it was all your head and you might be just seeing what you wanted to see and not what was intentionally there? Well...
Joe Flanigan was asked the question whether any of the scripts took his character to places that he didn't want to go and he answered that it wasn't so much specific actions or plots that they'd ever tried to give Sheppard, but he did often "fight them" when they decided that they to make his character "more earnest". Apparently, some of TPTB have told him that because he's the hero, he has to show that he "cares" more obviously. His argument is that he thinks that it's more powerful when you see a character fighting against showing that he cares and holding back emotion. He thinks that has a lot more resonance. He said "it's the difference between things having just one level and having two levels." That it's more powerful, especially with guys, seeing them fighting NOT to show any emotion than to just see them cry.
kirei_seimei and
yokiem were sitting beside me in the audience as he said this and they probably thought I was going to physically explode from the squee!
It's not just some serendipitous by product of his performance! It's a conscious acting decision! The man knows the power of what's held back and unspoken!
If anyone says Joe Flanigan is a lesser actor or doesn't understand his character again, remind me to slap them upside the head, would you? The man clearly knows what he's doing and those idiots obviously just don't get it!
SQUEEEEEE!!!!!!!!
And to further the squee factor, here's a few pics!
First up, the spider and the robot dog shamelessly schmoozed their way into photos with just about everyone.
Joe Flanigan (SGA)
Alan Tudyk (Firefly, Knight's Tale & others)
Connor Trinneer (Enterprise & SGA)
Chris Rankin (Harry Potter)
Peter Woodward (SGA, Crusade & others)
And a few more photos of Mr Flanigan...
(Someone ahead of
mcalex22 in the autograph queue gave him the shorts. And for those who don't know, that's the Australian flag on 'em)
Alan Tudyk from his second Q&A session! The man is a legend!
(And I've got to thank
kirei_seimei who took this and other great photos with my camera during that session)
Connor Trinneer during a brief "quiet spell" in the autograph queue
And... well, as many of you know, I'm NOT a slasher.
I'm really, REALLY NOT!
But even so, it really has to be said...
CAPTION THIS!
I'm sorry. No, I am. Those who I had lunch with today can attest to the fact that I totally cracked up when I found that pic when going through my photos.
Quick addendum: Because some people who don't know me are coming here to see the pics, I think I'd better explain. I'm a non-slasher, but I'm not anti-slash. There's a difference. I have nothing against slashdom in others and I pretty much have an "open door" policy with my LJ. You can say slashy stuff here. I might not agree with it, but I'm not likely to be offended by it either. Just thought I should make that clear ;-)
I had a totally FANTASTIC time this weekend. When we planned to go to Melbourne, we couldn't even be sure that Joe Flanigan would be able to make it to the con and we had NO IDEA that Alan Tudyk and Connor Trinneer might be there. And they all were just OUTSTANDING! Just too much fun. Honestly.
But now I REALLY need to get some sleep. Working tomorrow. Hopefully, more photos and a little more detailed rambling when I've got some time (and my brain is in gear).
Oh, but I've just got to add - the meal on the QANTAS flight home this evening? Lemon chicken. I kid you not.
;-)
