In feudal japan they were often considered ominous. People who were followed by cats were generally considered to be marked by death. So every time we see a cat in a scene with Okita we are being reminded of the fact that his HOT LITTLE SHINSENGUMI ASS HAD TO DIE AT AGE TWENTY FIVE, GODDAMNIT.
