Found this snippet from Wikipedia:
During World War I, due to concerns the American public would reject a product with a German name, American sauerkraut makers relabeled their product as "Liberty cabbage" for the duration of the war.
It's oddly reassuring to know that we were just repeating past silliness rather than inventing new ways to be stupid. Now that we're more or less "cool" with Germany I think we should still call sauerkraut "Liberty cabbage" simply because that's an amazing name. Oh right, "Hamburgers" should also be called "Freedom sandwiches".
