Alphabet dinner at Iron Barley last night - delayed from Saturday because of the power outage, but certainly worth the wait. The menu is pretty evenly devided between Sammiches (Sammiche -> Samwich -> Sandwich, in case you couldn't figure it out) and Entrees, with th Sammiches costinf $7-$8 and the entrees around $15. A Sammiche is probably plenty for one person, because they are huge. I had the prime rib sammiche, which was excellently tasty (it comes with horseradish sauce and a beefy dipping sauce, as well as a choice of side). The beer and wine lists are good, but a little eclectic - you won't find Sam Adams or Budweiser - and everything is reasonably priced. As far as dessert, the barley pudding (the menu says apple, but it was actually peach) is very good, and also enjoyed the pear crunch blaster. Service was friendly, helpful and efficient, and the atmoshpere is quite charming. The only downside is that it's about 25 minutes away, which makes it inaccessible if you don't have a car. Overall, 8.5/10
In other news, I started on my Grad school applications, even though the aren't due until the beginning of December at the earliest. Hopefully I'll get in somewhere that will give me lots of money (although, just to be safe, I'm applying for some independent fellowships).
Completely changed directions with my thesis - I am now writing about the specific ways in which WWI affected the collective construction of national identity in Britain. That is, attempting to identify, describe and explain the specific changes in the construction of British national identity that were directly or indirectly caused by the war, and attempt to connect the events of the war to the changes. Hopefully I won't change my mind again.
