Fic: "Somewhere In Time Part III -- Edge of the World"; Final Fantasy VII

Three months after Dirge of Cerberus.

Reeve awoke in a cold sweat, black beads dripping through his skin. His eyes slowly dulled from their mako green back to the normal brown. He grabbed the knife and slit open his scarred right arm, bleeding black onto the sheets... bleeding out the Jenova cells that tortured him. He bandaged up the arm afterwards, waiting for it to heal up.

A caped figure stood at his bedroom door. "Reeve?"

Apparently he had cried out in his sleep. The gunman never would have bothered otherwise. He leaned back against his pillows.

"I'm fine, Vincent. Just had a bad dream, that's all."

Vincent just stared at him for a moment before entering the room. He watched as Vincent silently sat on the edge of the bed, crimson eyes watching him.

"Care to talk about it?"

"I..." He sighed, looking away. "Forget about it, Vincent. It was nothing."

Vincent patted his leg, fingers sweeping across the cotton of his pajamas.

"When you're ready to talk, I'll be there." He got up and headed for the exit. "You know where to find me."

And the ex-Turk left as quietly as he had come.

He watched with vague fascination. Maybe he would take up Vincent's offer some day. But for now, he would have to struggle through another restless night alone, save for Jenova.

Had it really been thirty years? He looked at the clock as it blinked the time back at him. 1:05 AM. Two hours and twenty-five minutes to the anniversary. It wasn't a pleasant one. But it was the moment where his world had been turned upside-down. It was the moment that set in motion so much of the history of the past thirty years.

It was the moment Hojo began his grand experiment, and Reeve had been his lab rat.
