I don't remember if I mentioned this on here or not, and don't feel like checking so here it is again.
The Xbox 360 and PS3 now support DIVX/Xvid playback. So I got a couple new External HD's for Xmas, so I took my old 500GB and formated it to FAT32. I then started transferring some DIVX files over to it and hooked it to my 360, and have a central media hub for my Movies and TV Shows.
Now, I have done a few but since they don't sell DIVX formated files, I am going to be ripping the movies from my DVD's. Well, my main computer is my laptop, and XPS M170, which is often coming with me to school, and just doesn't have the best processor for ripping and transcoding.
So I remembered that the PS3 can do Linux, and the Cell processor is about the best thing in the world for number crunching (which is why its the most successful system on Folding @ Home even though there are a lot fewer of them compared to PC's.) So I started looking, and it turns out the PS3 can run Ubuntu now that they added PS3 support. So I am going to load it, I researched some ripping apps, and am going to have my PS3 rip my DVD's straight to DIVX, and then transfer them to my external HD.
The PS3 can do pretty much realtime ripping and transcoding, so this makes it a perfect system for it, and I can have it run and still do other things on my laptop or leave or whatever!
Yay!
This also means I get complete control over the quality. A lot of the movies you would download online would only be 700MB Divx files (To keep them a good size for CD's). Well I can make them 1GB+, which drastically improves video quality.
So yeah, thats my plan when I leave work. Thanks for reading.
