85 degrees is outstanding in these parts

Wow! It’s 85 degrees out there and where am I? Work. Of course. But it’s OK; this weather didn’t come from nowhere - we had a gorgeous weekend and I made sure I enjoyed it.

On Saturday I called my Irish friend John to see what he was up to. Bonnie, his girlfriend, was entertaining her family during their visit and so John had to go somewhere. (Bonnie’s Indian and John is, as I said, Irish and so Bonnie doesn’t want her family to know how serious the relationship is even though they’ve been together for nearly 3 years.) Anyway, John was walking around town and taking pictures when I called and asked if he wanted to go to Castle Island. He said he had never been and I hadn’t been in ages, so I thought it would be a great place to spend a beautiful Saturday afternoon. I picked him up at the JFK/UMass station and then drove from there. We walked around the fortress built for the War of 1812 and watched all the people who also decided to spend their day there. We also heard them - I don’t know how many languages we heard. Kids were playing ball, rolling down the hill, rollerblading. It was pure recreation. We stopped by the fishing pier and then went to the other side where you can see the airport just across the way. As we headed back toward the car, we sat on a bench and watched the planes landing. They are very low by the time that they pass over Castle Island. John was snapping away with his camera.

Then he and I went deeper into South Boston to Shenanigans - one of the countless Irish bars in the neighborhood. We ordered some Heinekens and watched the end of the Red Sox/Yankees game. For those of you who don’t know by now, we defeated the Yankees in all 3 games during our 1st series against them.

John still needed to be away from Bonnie, so we went across the Tobin Bridge to Chelsea so that John could take some pictures of the city from that angle. Then we called our friend Samir and he invited us to his rooftop BBQ. We went to his place in Brookline, helped assemble the grill and then he left to go food shopping. It was probably close to 11 by the time we started to eat, but we amused ourselves on the rooftop in the meantime. It was delicious.

John and I ended up sleeping at Samir’s, but I needed to wake up early. I had plans. At 7.00 I told John I was heading out and I went back home to sleep for a couple more hours, then woke up again, got ready, and headed to meet Aaron, my little brother. Aaron, his mother and I went to the Boston Sailing Center in the North End because the Center was offering free trips around the harbor during the afternoon. He had never been before and was frightened at first but once we got on the water he thought he was a pro. And, our skipper was a girl who graduated from Rollins a year before me. What a coincidence! It was a beautiful afternoon and I’m glad I got to enjoy it.

So yeah, the weekend’s over but the fair weather isn’t, although it’s supposed to go back to the mid-50s around Wednesday. I’m just gonna try to spend as much time out
