That color saturation and an interesting depth of field trick seems to be what does it, at least from my perspective. Pretty cool!

I was going to guess the same thing. That, and the lack of background movement. It was quite a shock every time a tarp rippled in the breeze or a pedestrian walked by. c.c

I've wondered whether the heavy color saturation is a side effect of tilt-shift or if folks do it intentionally just to add to the 'looks like a toy' perspective.
