finally learning stuff

So the other week I was walking home from downtown Bellingham by way of Western's campus, and walking through there I came across two guys doing martial arts. My first impression was correct: they were doing Wing Chun (or Wing Tsun, as they spell it in their particular system). So I stopped to chat with them for a bit. One of the guys (his name is actually Guy) is a native of Bellingham, taking classes at Western. He's apparently been doing wing tsun for about 9 years now, and he drives to Everett three times a week for his own classes. Guy is currently an assistant instructor, and would like to soon become an instructor and open a school of his own in Bellingham.

In any case, Guy is openly giving very cheap wing tsun lessons to anyone interested. Needless to say, I was interested. So I signed up. I'm pretty much the only person currently doing this. One other person showed interest but won't be starting until August.

So I went to my first lesson tonight. It was supposed to be for an hour and 15 minutes, but we lost track of time and went for two hours. It was fun. Learned some basic moves, principles, forms, exercises, got a good workout, muscles are all tired and twitchy. It's nice to be learning stuff from an actual person who knows what he's talking about. Thus far, wing tsun seems to be a very simple and efficient system. They've pretty much gotten the practice of simultaneously defending and counter-attacking down to an art form.

I'm just glad to have the chance to actually learn something, do something, practice something. Wing tsun wasn't my first choice martial art to learn (or even my second or third) but I'm not really picky as long as I'm learning something useful, and the coincidence was simply too much to ignore.

This should be fun.
