So, today I'm in Los Angeles, staying with my old roommate,
Meg, and some other folks who went to CCAD,
Darrenand James. They're all working on projects in the field of animation,
which while it isn't something I personally do, I'm fascinated by. I've
been in LA for a couple of days now, and have had a nasty little cold
that doesn't want to go away. Probably because I've been running myself
ragged traveling nonstop since my last posting and not getting enough
down time. Other that being sleepy though, I'm mostly just very
congested and headachey. On the good side of things being sick always
gives me a chance to write more and watch things like
this video by Lucy Knisley on making art about travel.
Today the temperature was 97 degrees from the Santa Ana winds, am I
lucky with timing for my trip? haha I stayed in and studied followed
by going to the movies with friends here. I haven't done much of
anything the past couple of days since I was sick and all.
Crater Lake was beautiful, we had the perfect day for visiting and it
was nice warm weather, though you could still see a bit of snow in areas
of the lake shore that stayed shaded all summer. Then we drove up to
Bend for the night before going back to Corvallis for the kids Pond
Turtle Education event. It was a good fun experience, but tiring. I
attempted to get caught up in readings for Mythology class, but only
with moderate success. Mostly I enjoyed simply seeing Oregon, drinking
lots of tea in the cool weather and spending time with friends.
A week ago today I took an overnight train to San Francisco, which
turned out to be quite the experience as the fellow next to me was very
rowdy. I had to be reseated away from him and eventually the man was
actually removed from the train and handed over to police custody at
3am. However, this seems unusual for train travel, and I have only had
good experiences otherwise. When I took the train from Virginia to
Indianapolis before going to Mexico I was next to a little old lady,
talking about the education system and teaching. On another train from
San Francisco to Santa Cruz I talked with a different woman about her
family and the welfare system.
I spent a day and a half in the lovely city of San Francisco, including a
night in a hostel. I walked 8 miles in one day and saw so many of the
sights, with perfect weather for it all! I even met a girl at the
hostel that I ended up exploring some of the city with on my second day
there. I have a bunch of pictures, and should get to work on them again
soon. I've dealt with all the ones from the summer now, so I'll have
Mexico done over the weekend and the rest soon.
From there I headed down to Santa Cruz to visit with my friend Brandon,
from summer camp. I relaxed so much there that I didn't even take any
pictures, though I baked cookies, went downtown, heard live music, and
had a good time.
Monday, the 10th I headed down to LA and have been in Glendale since. I
went to the La Brea Tar Pits, the LA Farmer's Market (where I had frog
legs for lunch!), and the LA County Museum of Art, but have otherwise
just done little things like tour the animation studio my friends work
at, get some yogurt or dinner out with them and that sort of thing. I
feel a little guilty for not doing more, but have felt too run down to
do anything about it, and there's always next time.
I've begun to feel a bit better this evening though, and it's a good
thing, because tomorrow I'll be headed to Anaheim to meet my friend
Amber. Once I drop my things off at the hotel we'll be staying in we're
going to Disneyland!
