A Vacation of Sorts

Puerto Vallarta is not a bad place.  After spending a week here I rather
like it, but I wouldn't want to stay here for long.  There's only so
much to do...beach activities and tourist ones.  So I've got myself a
vacation I didn't really expect.  Not a bad situation I suppose.  I've
been able to go swimming every day, so that's a plus.

On the other hand I haven't gotten too much done in regards to my
paintings.  I have two started from when I was in Guadalajara, and have
worked on both a bit, but have much more I need to do to reach my goal
for the semester.  Actually....I haven't really made a goal, not an
official one anyway.  I just thought I'd make about 20 paintings (which
working small scale like I do seems fairly manageable.  I'm hoping the
move to Oregon will just start things and I'm aiming to get 3-4
completed paintings and 2-3 more in the works by the end of my time
there.

It is still outrageously hot here.  I've been working without internet,
which means I've gone to cafes to check emails, or have lived without
internet.  Right now it's 95 degrees here (113 with humidity), and I
found that there's a Starbucks not too far from my little hotel, so I've
camped out here today, and am writing away, researching my travel
plans, and sipping on an iced chai until it cools down a bit.  I might
even spring for dinner here, as silly as that sounds, but when there are
so few places with air conditioning and free internet it makes a bit of
sense.

Other than all that I'm pretty happy with things.  I've gone shopping at
a bunch of the little street vendors that are all around, played bingo
in Spanish, sampled local foods, and went to the beach at night.  During
the day I try to stay cool between swimming, siestas and finding air
conditioning.  I'm reading Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis, spending my
evening with friends (on of whom couldn't take her job and will be
heading back to Canada tomorrow, though Michael is still enjoying it),
and making sure I have all my Christmas and birthday gifts ready to take
home to my family.

I'm looking forward to the next leg of my trip, especially the weather!
I'm aiming to enjoy my last evenings here though and plan to pack in
lots of fun over the next 48 hours.  I am eager to get caught up on
school and things though, and really excited to see Holly and the many
other friends I've been talking to and planning to spend time with.  It
looks like I'll be heading to Disneyland even!
