"Misirlou" and its beginning...

Dec 30, 2008 14:16

The word misirlou in Greek means “the Egyptian girl”. The song was first performed in Athens in 1927. This form of music is called rebetika which is the music form of Turkish refugees who took refuge in Greece.

As a child, Dick Dale’s grandparents, who were from Lebanon, played the song for him and he fell in love with it. When became a musician he took this song and turned it into a surf classic.

The song has been covered from groups just as Dos Compandres to The Trashmen.

The only reason why I wanted to know all this was because I wanted to know if Dick Dale was the original composer. In my mind I thought maybe it was written by another surf musician. But I got more than I bargained for with this song. It was written by someone completely different. His name is Michalis Patrino. It is actually a very pretty song.

Please forgive my lack of eloquence in this very brief article. It seems I cannot write a sentence today.
