Friday late afternoon

On the corner of Campus Drive and Mayfield today, around 5:10, Teo and I stopped on the sidewalk because a sheriff was sternly directing traffic with a whistle. But nothing was happening. It was a completely random traffic regulation. Then we saw blue and red flashing lights coming down Campus Drive, then we realized Pervez Musharraf, former president of Pakistan, just gave a talk at Memorial Auditorium, then Musharraf's motorcade buzzed by with men in sunglasses and black suits hanging out the windows, memorizing faces, and for a moment, Teo and I were dazed: history was driving by us in black unmarked cars. Then the sheriff left and within seconds the intersection was just as it usually is, like there had been a glitch in The Truman Show and everyone pretended it never happened.
