Mylapore Tank

After a month has passed, I find that the pain is still not easing pereceptibly, but life goes on....I think, though, that I will post a few scenes from the city that my brother lived in, and loved (though his first love was Kolkata, too!) for 3 decades....

Mylapore is one of the oldest parts of Chennai, and the heart of Mylapore consists of two ( Read more... )

Ooh, your photo blog today reminded me of the Tamizh words for "Typing" and "Shorthand". :)
And I love kadambam! Aah...nostalgia....

Yes, I did think of you when I saw that sign. The words, too, are not awkward fabrications, but fall neatly off the tongue.

innA machAn...oNNum theriyalai! Of COURSE it has a fairly nice Metro...and the ride along Mylapore and the shoreline is like a heritage ride, seeing the Indo-Saracenic structures of Chennai University, Triplicane, Lighthouse....will do a post on that soon...

There they have done a sensible job and linked it up with the existing "local" train system. Which we in Blr could very well have done, with the tracks extending from the middle of the city to the west. But no, contracts had to be awarded, money had to be made...

Your photo of the saree shop suddenly made me remember a dream I had last night. I dreamed a woman was showing me how to put on a saree, and she showed me a way to tuck in the end at the very end so that it wouldn't keep slipping off my shoulder or head, so I could do things.

The mehendi flowers are so pretty--but I like just the street scenes, for a sense of the flavor of daily life.

All those photos is to make people like you participate in the "daily" (not touristy) life of my country ....and to make you start preparing for a visit...!

It's a wonderful way of sharing--because for many of us, it may be some years before we can ever make it over, and your photos (and anushsh's--his were lovely yesterday, too) make us feel we are visiting.

Wonderful dream! :) In South India, we don't wear our sarees over our heads though. That's done, today, only in the North,in some places, and that, too, when the women are in the presence of men, or outside...a kind of veil. Covering one's head with the "pallu" is considered a mark of respect in the north. In south India, it's not done at all...only widows used to wear sarees which covered their shorn heads. So here, the saree covering the head has a negative connotation!

The colours are something that you, as an artist, will really love when you visit my country. Make plans!
