Monthly (first Thursday) walk with Eastside Audubon Society.
I went for a bird walk with the Eastside Audubon Society yesterday. It's held monthly, on the first Thursday. Kathy Kuyper and Chuck Guilford were the co-leaders.
I me et the Carlson family Pat, Richard ("Dick") and their son, Chris (who is very knowledgeable about the lake and especially the beavers) and two girls, Mindy and Nhu, among others.
It was emphatically not a beginner bird walk, with all the usual problems one faces as a beginner...half-names of birds shouted out by experienced birders("Oh, that's a Wilson's!" ...Wilson's WHAT, I don't know , and have to ask thrice before getting the answer that it is a Warbler.)
One has to know English (plus, the Pacific Northwest American accent!) and be very quick to catch bird names while peeking up, down, and around.
I got a few lifers, of course (Black-headed Grosbeak, the "Wilson's", and a Vireo) but equally interesting were a huge bullfrog, three Softshell Turtles...and a Bald Eagle, sitting in the middle of the lake, which all the other participants took very casually but which was quite thrilling for me. (I used to go to Alton on the confluence of the Mississipi and the Missouri to see these birds with their huge nests.)
My checklist is at
https://ebird.org/checklist/S179580603 (36 sp). The walk leader, Chuck Guilford, shared his checklist with me, and that is
https://ebird.org/checklist/S179657514 (44 sp). That's the way I used to improve my birding when I started...I would make my list (before eBird!)and then see how many more species the experts had got, which I had missed!

Black-headed Grosbeak
Softshell Turtle (you can see the small head to the left)
Red Valerian (I think)
Red-eared Sliders in a row, basking
