My walk to my daughter's, in terms of livelihoods and professions:
Two young men in sannyasi's ochre robes, singing to the tune of an ektara.
Several young students, as I cross a deemed University.
"American" corn and ice-cream vendors with their carts, doing brisk business with the aforementioned students.
Three transgenders who beg at the street corners, while the traffic police look the other way (and extend their hands now and then.)
The old newspapers-and-scrap items trader, who gives me a smile as I pass by. (I have known him for over 20 years now,)
Vegetable and fruit vendors, sprinkling their wares with water, to prevent the hot sun from drying them out.
An astrologer, sitting glumly in front of his board that announces that all life and love problems will be solved. Who is going to solve the astrologer's problem of no customers?
A jewellery artisan, sitting in front of the shop, with a very pretty young lady who has given some earrings to be repaired.
Pourakramikas, their morning duty of sweeping the pavements (usually displacing the dust from A to B) done, sitting with hot cups of chai, idly chattering.
A gardener hosing down the path in front of the house; he will water the plants in the mornings or evenings.
A chauffeur, sitting in the car, and listening to a radio channel while his employers are busy with their work elsewhere.
Three auto drivers, in desultory conversation.
A young man busy slicing potatoes into hot oil. They will be salted and stored and sold.
The iddli vendor washing the iddli plates; she will be busy again in the evening.
How can I be bored on a walk? Whether the jungle is real or concrete, there's always something interesting!
