Harry Potter Book Seven - Discuss

Aug 08, 2007 16:37

You knew it was coming. I finished the book, and I want to discuss it with all of you. I want to see what you think. I want us to rant and rave about the things we hated, and I want us to sing the praises of those things we enjoyed.

I admit, I'm kind of off my rocker right now, and can't bring things up to perfect detail. Work does that to me. So I'll just mention a few of the thoughts that come to my head that I know people have been bringing up a lot.

WARNING: Spoilers will be behind this LJ cut. If you don't like that, then you'd better not read the cut.

And don't you dare read the comments, if that's the case.

Okay, that's enough.

On with the show. <3

My thoughts at the moment, having finished the book on Sunday morning:

Death of Fred - Am I the only one that think she chose to kill off one twin to get rid of the twincest fanfics? I can't be the only one, right? Not that I like twincest fanfic, but that was just the feeling I got.

Ending in general - I'm probably also not the only one that went "Oh, she's trying to stop the fanfic writers. Instead of killing him, she tied things up in a bundle, and told her fans to suck on eggs because that's the ending, and that's it, and stop pairing all those other pairings already! They aren't canon." So, am I the only one who thinks that all she did was set herself up for a lot of AU writers to pop out of the woodwork? And she gave us 19 years to play with. SO much could happen in 19 years!

Tonks and Remus' deaths - Okay, I realize people had to die. It's a war, for gosh darned sake. It's going to be bloody. It's going to be brutal. It's going to get ugly. So why do two very important characters not even get a death scene? We know more about how LILY AND JAMES died than we know about Tonks and Remus, and given that Lily and James were dead well before the first book, that's kind of pathetic. She had to kill off the pair specifically to have another orphaned kid, in my opinion. Fall of Voldemort, Mark 1, was Harry. Fall of Voldemort, Mark 2? Teddy. Except Teddy has his grandmother, Andromeda. (How many people forgot she was still alive at first? I could swear it was only Ted Tonks that died.) He also has his godfather, Harry, although we don't really realize that until really really far in and go "zomghorseybirdwtf?" Teddy is there to show us that an orphan can have a good life, and not all orphans are subjected to the crap that Riddle and Potter were forced to live with. WHY she needed to show us that, I really don't know, because we knew that already...

Colin Creevy - I can't be the only one that cried about this one, and wanted to know why, exactly, we couldn't have some short heroics detailing this death? War is death. Pointless death, even. But usually even pointless death DOES have something to it. For all we know, Rowling could have had a bit of Gargoyle fall on the lad's head! That's just not right...

Neville - Is awesome.

James Potter, Mark 2 - Who wants to bet his middle name is Sirius?

James and Lily Potter, Mark 2 - Am I the only one that thought it was terribly creepy to name his son and daughter after his parents? Okay, his son makes sense. TOTAL sense. It's the two of them together that creeps me out. Maybe I'm a wierdo.

Teddy + Ummmm, Bill and Fleur's kid whose name I can't pronounce let alone spell - What is this showing us? That Rowling has similar bias to those she writes in her books. The son of a werewolf in love with the daughter of a werewolf tainted man. Halfbreeds and tainted stick together? It just isn't right, I tell you. It just isn't right! I'm sure they make a cute couple, but it sends entirely the wrong message.

Okay, work's ending. I know I have so much more to say, but just not the time to say it. So... comment away! Get a nice discussion going. I want to hear everything that everyone thinks. Now go! <3
