Food For Thought - The Healthy Kind

So a friend's post made me check out a new website. I'm a foodie, or I pretend to be, and I love eating and cooking... when I feel up to it. But I know, for a fact, that I don't get enough veggies, and I don't think I eat any fruit whatsoever! I'm doing my body an injustice, but I'm at least trying to be good.

Cooking is so hard at our house. I've mentioned this to Joel a few times, but I don't think he sees the problem. Joel eats veggies, but very rarely, and only under certain circumstances.

Raw Broccoli
Raw Carrots (usually baby)
Celery (with peanut butter)
Steamed Coliflower
Lettuce (straight off the head, no dressing)
Potatoes (more of a starch then a veg, and only as french fries)
Beansprouts (in beef & noodles)

I think that is about it, honestly... although I could be wrong.

These things are hideously difficult to fit into any form or fashion of dietary plan! Between that, and the fact that there are very few FOODS that he is willing to eat, and my meal plans are limited to the same six or seven meals.

Hot Dogs (with buns)
Chex Mix Chicken
Spaghetti with Meatsauce (original Ragu, no additional veggies or other foods)
Chicken Strips (the frozen kind, and only if we find the right ones)
Chicken Drumsticks (frozen kind unless we get fast food)
Terriyaki Beef & Noodles
Beef Taquitos (frozen, only if we get the right ones)
Chicken Yakitori (frozen, and nobody seems to carry them anymore)

I think that's it. So you can see, it's hard to find some of the foods, and most of them can get fairly expensive. Plus, it's a lot of meat (chicken or beef) with starch (rice or noodles) and very little else. I usually make myself a side to go with these foods, so that I get a more rounded meal. Between everything, though, I am starting to get tired of making the same things over and over. I love Joel and want to make him happy, but after a while I just get frustrated, because really, nothing else in the world tastes good to him? O.O I don't understand. My brain and taste buds just don't compute the same way.

For people in my situation, where the other simply refuses to eat their daily share of veggies, what do you do? Well, you buy whatever veggies it is they are willing to eat, and you pray they eat them, right? We have celery and peanut butter at home right now, and a bag of baby carrots. But honestly? GOOD fresh veggies are hard to come by, expensive, and have absolutely no shelf life. It's an expensive option.

If they can get away with it, there is another option for some people, and this really fascinates me. The website for Drink My Daily Veggies is a bit simplistic, and could be laid out better, but the concept is amazing. I've tried at least one of those veggie drink products, and, let me tell you, it was GROSS. I'm not saying I know what this tastes like, as I don't, but they have a free sample offer that I'm seriously considering. And it isn't just a drink. Being a powder that you can put in anything, it's a lot more versatile.

I could see myself using this as a seasoning for rice balls, in a chicken soup, an omolete, or even to add some kick to my spaghetti sauce (don't worry, Joel, I won't throw it in there to surprise you). I mean heck, it might even taste good in the sauce, and maybe Joel will be willing to eat it. XD

The video on the website, by the way, is amazing. ::laughs:: "Not in eggs." Do not watch if you're squeamish, as the kid has the expected 'kid' reaction to "zomg no this tastes bad." But really, this is all personal preference. It very well might be tasty!

To think, all that potential, in a tiny little package!

More excuses for me to whine about not getting enough veggies and try to see if people have ideas on how I can get out of the 'cooking the same thing' rut without Joel starving in protest.
