Tumblr Masterpost It's dark when Alex's parents get home, but he's perched on the couch, waiting. He wants to confront them and understand why they would just abandon Luke, because he just doesn't.
The foyer light flickers on and he hears the hushed tones of his parents voices. Pulling himself up, he walks towards them and in an instant they look at him in wonder.
"Honey, it's late you should be in bed." His mother comes towards him and reaches her hand out, trying to grasp his shoulder. Alex flinches and moves back from her touch and he watches her face contort in confusion and hurt.
"You lied to me."
Alex digs in his pocket and pulls out the crumpled letter. His father's face gets stony once he sees the item in his son's hands.
"Luke never wanted to stop talking to us. You tried to make him." Alex pauses, "How could you do that to your own son!?"
His mother's face is torn. Little drops of tears are trailing down her cheeks and Alex almost feels bad, because he hasn't seen his mom cry in years. The remorse is gone when he remembers the letter in his hands and Luke's face.
On the other hand, his father looks livid and unhappy. He doesn't even look like the father Alex grew up with because of the current expression on his face.
"He chose to completely disregard everything we had worked so hard to give him. All he wanted to do was get famous and play his guitar in a band. He should have gotten his head out of the clouds and gone to college!"
Alex glares at his father and feels nothing but anger towards him. "You never supported him, like a real dad would."
After looking at his mom who had not spoken anything this whole time, he turned away and headed for his room.
The window was open when he arrived, the curtains blowing in the light breeze. Shutting it, he can hear the shouting of his father down the stairs, and loud crying from his mother.
Leaning on the windowsill, he shuts his eyes and breathes deeply.
A loud cough disturbs his thinking, and he swivels around quickly.
Jack is standing in the corner, with a smirk on his face. The opened window makes more sense to Alex now; Jack got inside by climbing through it.
Before Alex can speak, Jack does. "I understand how you feel. Parents are supposed to put you first, because you're their flesh and blood. But they don't. They never do."
By the time Jack has finished speaking, he's standing in front of Alex.
His fingertips are sliding along Alex's cheek and Alex's breath hitches at the sensation.
"Because humans are selfish creatures." The tone that Jack uses sounds cold and bitter, and leaves a bad taste inside his mouth.
There's a moment of silence. Both teenagers are in the middle of the room, staring at each other, almost as if to dare each other to even breathe. Alex wishes that he were anywhere but here.
Jack finishes his speech, whispering. "I would always put you first."
With that, his hand drops to his side and fixes Alex with a smoldering stare.
Alex can do nothing but stare back, because there are no words that come to his mind. He is confused and conflicted at the emotions that are coursing through him. Why would he believe someone that he barely knows, that has been stalking him? If he can't even trust his own parents, how could he ever trust Jack?
"I think you need to leave." Alex looks away and chooses to stare at the wall. He counts the amount of posters he has lining them, to avoid looking at the other teen in the room.
There's silence, but then Jack speaks.
"Okay, but I will be back."
Alex doesn't look anywhere else until he hears the other teen's feet hit the pavement on the sidewalk.
His room doesn't look any different from before, but he still feels uneasy. He doesn't want to be here, and especially not alone. All he wants is to be with Luke.
