The first time was an accident - Gem had left the kid in the bullpen with the kid’s honoree Godfather and name sake, Normal, when Normal started to get sick and ran off to the bathroom, forcing Alec to stay and watch the kid.
At nearly six months old the kid was already sitting up. She had watched as Normal ran off then looked up at him, curious.
Alec had expected her to cry after suddenly finding herself alone with basically a stranger. Instead she tilted her head as if she was assessing him. Then she shocked him when she smiled, holding up her arms wordlessly wanting him to lift her up.
Alec arched his brow in wonder and didn’t bother to stop the corners of his mouth lift into a smile. It was obvious the kid Reagan seemed to sense and know she was safe, that he was like her, like her mom, was another X5.
By the time Normal got back, Alec barely acknowledged him and he continued singing to Reagan who had nestled warmly in his arms.
The second time was less of an accident not that he’d ever tell anyone, but the truth was he enjoyed Reagan’s undivided attention.
Unknown to him Gem was behind Normal watching. Both stood there, their mouth open gaping in disbelief that Reagan had fallen asleep in his arms.
Shortly after that, he became Gem’s primary go to for babysitting easily edging out Normal - not that either of them ever told Normal. Alec only declined if he had to work or Max sent him out on assignment - otherwise he surprised everyone -including himself- when he made himself available to sit for Reagan whenever Gem needed him.
Jokingly he had told Logan and Max, Reagan was the only one who had the power to break his heart. It wasn’t until the words were out of his mouth that he realized it had been the truth. It should have scared him shitless, instead, Alec smiled and knew before going home he was going to swing by Gem’s place and kiss Reagan goodnight.
