I am sick of hearing people on NPR and TV talking about politicians (Sarah Palin right now) being better for our country because they're "outside the Beltway" or "just like us." I don't want a politician just like me! I want a politician who has experience getting things done, politically!
It's like saying, "I don't want a plumber with experience. I want a plumber just like me. I want a plumber with zero knowledge of plumbing. I'm sure that will make him or her better at the job. In fact, I want a plumber who hates other plumbers and despises plumbing as a career!"
It does not make any kind of sense. Only in politics are inexperience, stubbornness and an inability to get things done seen as job qualifications. It is madness.
As far as this whole crazy baby business, I don't really care; but if Governor Palin is going to trot her family out at every possible opportunity to show how "pro-life" she is, I don't think she can whimper about people talking about her kids. Leave them at home if you don't want them talked about. She sure doesn't mind people talking about how her oldest son is going into the military.
And Phyllis Schafly should not be allowed on any more programs of any kind, ever. Saying that a Democratic candidate would have aborted a fetus with Down's Syndrome and that is "the difference between Republicans and Democrats" is unfounded and ridiculous. For that matter, it cannot be safely said, as the president of the Southern Baptist's Association did yesterday on NPR, that a pro-choice candidate would certainly abort a fetus diagnosed with Down's Syndrome. I know plenty of pro-choice folks who would not do so. Sweeping judgements from small-minded people will always sound better in sound bites, though, I suppose.
In any case, I'm voting for Obama and I hope women with good sense will outnumber any of these few (but highly trumpeted) cases I've heard about in which women have gone issues-blind and gender-crazed in favor of an anti-choice, anti-environment, anti-woman candidate for VICE-president. Of course, considering McCain's age and health, the fact that she is a heartbeat away from the presidency seems more pertinent than it might otherwise be -- an even stronger case for leaving that ticket severely alone.
If only McCain had stuck to advocating for Americorps, we could have agreed on something.
