Title: Flying True
Rating: PG
Characters: Smith, Elwood
Prompt: When the pawn hits the conflict, he thinks like a king...
Smooth and slow, he wiped at the small handgun as he watched Elwood. The sun had already started to rise in the sky, casting soft gray shadows along the bench where Smith rested. He worked with the cool efficiency of one who knew his weapon well and not just from admiring it from a distance.
Smith knew every crevice and curve of the killing machine. It was his partner in a way only Gamma could match and, even then, it could be far more trustworthy than the other man. But, it was Gamma's unpredictability that made him all the more intriguing to work with.
For example, the boy not too far away from where Smith sat. Elwood had never been in their plans. In fact, he was one of those blips that made traveling with Gamma exciting, even if more dangerous.
Elwood wasn't trained to fight like they had been and, with the way Gamma was holding back, he never would understand. That was what was going to end up being dangerous for the both of them. The small kindness that Gamma had offered to Elwood in bringing him with them was going to kill both of them if they weren't careful and, by not teaching Elwood, Gamma was being just that: Not careful.
Smith whistled the boy over, setting his gun down neatly on the bench and took the blade from Elwood's hands when he stepped cautiously.
"Try not to swing your elbow so much," Smith explained, shifting his grip and throwing the knife as an example, "It has a better chance of flying smoothly like that."
Just because Gamma wasn't careful didn't mean Smith couldn't be, after all.
