Naming cars...

Dec 01, 2016 11:35

This is a thing I've always wondered at. Prompted by walking into the office this morning to a colleague mid-conversation about 'Peggy' and how old she is and the damage caused by something, and it took me a good few minutes to realise this was about a car. And I've never understood that.

I'm on my...third, fourth car now? I can't actually remember. Possibly fourth. And I've never named any of them. I don't really understand why you would name a car. It's...a car? It's not really something you warm to or bond with, like a pet. It just...drives? Or not, depending on the car.

Do you guys name your cars? And do you have any idea why? Have you always done so? I'm really curious about the motivation behind it, because I just don't understand naming inanimate objects. I mean, boats and planes, I guess it's an identifying thing - but cars have registration numbers/licence plates, so the name is only known to the driver and/or friends or family, not as an identification tool.
