I stopped watching Sleepy Hollow near the end of S2. I loved the first season - it was fun, it was wacky, it had a sense of humour, it acknowledged the ridiculousness of its plot-lines, it had a great cast, and there was off the charts chemistry between the two leads. And then it was as though the writers forgot all the things that made the first season such a hit, and the show went off the rails pretty damn fast.
I'd been meaning to pick up perhaps and give it another try, mainly because I missed Abbie Mills and Ichabod Crane. But hearing about the S3 finale, I'm glad I stayed well clear. Because
you kill Abbie Mills? You kill her? After damn near two seasons of sidelining the main character in favour of her handsome white male companion, two seasons of shunting aside the lead actress, a woman of colour, in favour of her handsome white male co-star, of turning her into a sidekick in her own show and making it all about Ichabod's journey instead of Abbie's - after all that, no wonder Nicole Beharie wanted out. And so the writers just basically butcher their own mythology and characterisation and kill her off.
Wow. If Sleepy Hollow's audience hadn't all but deserted the show by now, it certainly will after this. I swear, I don't think I've ever seen a show launch with such potential and then almost set out to deliberately sabotage itself like this.
The only thing I'm sad about is that Nicole Beharie and Tom Mison had great chemistry together and I loved watching them onscreen. I'll miss Abbie and Ichabod, but that's about all.
