What are your current thoughts about Supernatural?

Ahh, Supernatural. I have been through so many phases with this show. In many ways, it's a bit like a relationship. I first met Supernatural via the pilot and wasn't impressed on the first date. But I gave it another chance and this time something sparked and I fell heads over heels in love. And since then I've been madly obsessed with it, somewhat nonplussed, occasionally bored, sometimes I've drifted away from it, but I've always come back to it, and now we've settled into comfortable mediocrity. And quite frankly, I think the show has too, but I'm okay with that, to a certain extent. Part of me thinks they should call time on it, but then part of me really can't imagine not having Team Free Will around anymore. And I can't imagine Jared and Jensen not working together anymore!

I've always been a Dean girl, through and through. I did ship the Wincest back in the day, but then Castiel turned up and I'm afraid Sam became the third wheel for me. But I love how the heart of the show is always, always, always Sam and Dean and the quite ridiculous things those two boys will do for each other.

I think the high-point of the show were the first four years - as much as I loved the introduction of Castiel as a character, I do also think once the show started moving away from the road-trip, monster of the week storylines, into the convoluted angels and demons and heavenly showdowns and God and Lucifer and prophets, I think the overall quality has suffered. That's not to say there haven't been some amazing stand-out episodes in all that time - I can think of few shows that have pushed the envelope in the way that Supernatural has, particularly in terms of meta episodes.

Is it problematic? Yes. Does the show have an issue with women? Hell yes. But at the same time, this is a show about two men, who have been raised in a hyper-masculine, violent and unstable environment, with no female role models, with no lasting healthy relationships with women...I would be surprised if Sam and Dean didn't have issues with regard to women. That's not an excuse for the way the show consciously writes and treats its female characters - but if they deliberately write Dean, for example, as misogynistic, that's probably not far wrong.

I'm endlessly annoyed at the way genre shows skate under the radar when it comes to awards - Jensen, in particular, has been criminally neglected. The acting chops of that boy, and the sheer range he's been required to display playing Dean - action, comedy, tragedy, you name it, often in the same episode. And yet a show like Supernatural will never get acting nominations the way 'serious' drama shows will, and that's bullshit.

So yeah, Supernatural. It's one of those shows where I've probably occupied every stage on the fandom scale at some point - up, down, in, out. But I can't quit it.
