Thinking about a New York break...

Dec 07, 2015 11:46

I have never been on holiday on my own before, and I think it's time I tried it. I seem to have fewer and fewer single friends, or friends without kids, or friends who can afford it - and if I wait to have people to go with, I'm may never go anywhere ( Read more... )

If you're willing to stay in Brooklyn, I can absolutely recommend a hotel. The Prospect Park Best Western is reasonably priced, comfortable, and practically on top of the subway. It is incredibly convenient for hoping over to Manhattan and it is located in a nice part of Brooklyn very close to one of my favorite places. (The epic historical Greenwood cemetery!)

Thanks for the rec, I'll look into it. Although I'd prefer something in Manhattan, prices will probably push me further out, so as long as it's close to a subway I don't mind!

It only takes about fifteen minutes to end up in Manhattan from there. Plus a ton of good food in the neighborhood. Sadly I've never stayed in a hotel in Manhattan, only the homes of friends! I hope you can plan a good trip - I love NYC a lot.

New York is awesome and not just because I live there! (I live in Brooklyn). And there are a lot of places to visit for sure. After living here for over 20 years I still didn't see them all.

Spring is probably the best time - it can be snowy in the winter and the city does not cope with snow well. And it can be very humid and hot in the summer. But spring is lovely.

I don't know hotels here but I agree with above comment that staying in Brooklyn would be more affordable and an adventure. And with subway, it is very easy to get anywhere in Manhattan.

It would definitely be fun to meet in person when you come visit.

You could try AirBnB, but yeah, the problem with NYC is that you need friends to stay with, or it's super expensive! :s Otherwise I would visit a lot more, being only a 4-4.5 hour bus ride away (if you were ever interested in hopping down to Washington, DC, my couch and/or mattress is always open! Lots of history here too, the Washington Monument that Eliza helped build, etc. :D).

April/springtime would definitely be nicer to visit, although prices do go up as well. I am hoping and praying though that the weekend I plan on going up for Hamilton in February is unseasonably warm! :p (I have a friend I'm staying with one night who literally lives 5 min from the Grange by coincidence, ahhhhhh #ItsQuietUptown)

And traveling on your own can be great, namely because you get to see what you want to see! ;) I've pretty much only ever traveled on my own or with my parents.

I've been to Washington before too, but I'll bear in mind you're there - it's another city I love visiting. Basically I'm fascinated by American history, so I always want to visit the historical sites when I'm in the States, but most of the time I'm with friends or family who prefer the tourist stuff!

I haven't stayed there, but there's Pod 51 and Pod 39 - the rooms are super tiny and some are shared bathroom, others have it en suite.

You know I'm always up for historical stuff! I'm limited to weekends with work, but would love to come in for the day to see you. Let me know as you plan what your dates are :)

I was looking at the Pod hotels actually, they seem kinda cute. And I don't mind tiny if there's only me and I'm only sleeping there! And I was a boarding school girl so I don't mind sharing facilities!

Haha, you know I will totally grab you if I make it to New York. I totally plan a wee Hamilton pilgrimage or two whilst I'm there.

I can't comment on hotels -- I live here, I've never stayed in any.

But considering time -- April or May, or September or October. You definitely want to avoid summer if you can, and most especially high summer. You'll be sharing your trip with a million tourists or so, otherwise.
