Where is the Elementary fanfic?

Okay, first off, a caveat. I still don't consider Elementary 'Sherlock Holmes'. That is not to say I don't like it, because I do. I actually really enjoy it, as a crime procedural among other crime procedurals. I think it's a good show. I find the characters interesting, I like their relationships and dynamic, I find the cases interesting, I like ( Read more... )

I would, to be honest! I really do enjoy it, I would say it's one of the highlights of my weekly TV. I really like the way the characters play off one another, and I love Joan Watson as a character.

But she's not 'Watson'. You just can't...strip away all the canon surrounding a character, take him out of his age, his environment, his gender, his background, his history, and just keep part of the name and say it's the same character. It's not. Same with Sherlock Holmes. They have the same names but they are not Holmes and Watson.

But as characters in a crime procedural with similar names to Holmes and Watson, I really enjoy it. It's a fun show.

I'm downloading the episodes, thinking of watching it over the hiatus. I have no problem to watch it as a generic John Doe and Mary Smith show, what pisses me off are the crazy Sherlock fans on the one hand and the crazy Elementary fans on the other.

I'm so sick of Elementary fans hating on Sherlock and calling Benedict Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman, Stephen Moffat and Mark Gatiss names, so sick of it. I'm also sick of Sherlock fans making racial slurs against Lucy Liu. It's like people are unable to watch Elementary without bashing Sherlock. I have a girl on my flist who does that, ever time she comments on Elementary, she bashes Sherlock so hard, I actually filtered out her Elementary tag entries from my flist.

I wasn't expecting to like Elementary but I'm really enjoying it. I like the dynamic between the 2 characters and Aiden Quinn as Gregson is ace. Not seen any fanfic but to be fair, I haven't been looking all that hard.

I actually feel the same way. If they hadn't called him Sherlock Holmes, I'd be all over it. As it is, I'm enjoying it muchly but I don't want to get involved in any emotional way.

I wonder if they hadn't called him Sherlock and thus added all the connections, would there be a massive him / Gregson shipping thing?

Think about it this way, though: it's Sherlock Holmes in the way that the Great Mouse Detective is Sherlock Holmes! In that... Bride and Prejudice is Pride and Prejudice! They changed all the names, changed the entire location and period, and yet it's still a thoroughly enjoyable movie. It's not P&P, but it's not supposed to be. I can enjoy it as a derivative of the original - not the same, but not entirely separate.

I don't think the Sherlock in Elementary is supposed to be Sherlock Holmes. It's just ...like an AU of the original canon, y'know?

Whatever the case, I'm really glad you enjoy it! It's also one of the highlights of my week. I have a love-hate relationship with Moffat's SUSPENSE and DRAMAZ!!! so while I enjoy the feel and setting of BBC's Sherlock (and yes, the SUSPENSE), I feel like I can identify and connect with the characters in Elementary much, much more. It's more of a slow burn. Ahhh, this was a long comment I'm just glad people are liking Elementary as a show because Lucy Liu is boss!
