Peter stopped as he entered his home, there was a small bonfire burning in the middle of the dining room table. Okay, not really a bonfire, it was a birthday cake - his birthday cake.
“Happy Birthday Peter”, a cheer came from behind him.
Turning he noticed the small gathering of people in his living room. Smiling they joined him at the dining room table.
“Better blow out the candles before your house burns down, “ came a shout from the back of the room.
He rubbed his face, took a deep breath and blew out the candles. Soon presents were being pushed in his direction.
He opened the presents, most of which were gifts mentioning old age. He laughed along with everyone, and enjoyed the company of his friends and colleagues.
A brightly colored package was set in front of him. He looked up and Neal was smiling. Peter looked at the portrait sized box, “Do I want to open this?”
“Nothing illegal, I promise.”
He opened the present to reveal a marvelous charcoal drawing of himself, El, and Satchmo. He was speechless.
Regaining his composure, he smiled at Neal, “This is beautiful, thank you.”
“You’re welcome Peter, Happy Birthday.”
