I thought it was common knowledge that deer grazed at dawn and twilight, the better to be camouflaged from prey. Noone's told the beautiful doe that grazes in our cul de sac, though. Around noon every day, she wanders from the woods across the way up to the crab apple tree and has a few apples, either those that have fallen or ones hanging heavily down from the branches. They she crosses the street to have a munch the roses at the top of my neighbor's driveway. From there she crosses into our yard to dessert on our roses or hydrangea buds (which are now long gone, of course). They she ambles back to her home in the woods.
She is the most beautiful thing: graceful and sleek and completely habituated. Much as I morn the death of my flowers, I hope she lives long and prospers.
