I've digressed somewhat, but there are two points I'd really like to stress relating to your questions.
Firstly, whilst as I've matured I've strayed from specific types of comic to being open about the whole thing and despite what I said in my earlier paragraph, I think that manga is still one of the most open and diverse genres of comic that exists. There are so many different styles in it and that come from it. I can't deny that without it I would never have viewed comics in the way I do, full of emotion in the mere panels and speech bubbles themselves. I am glad to be shown how artistic comics can be, and not just a lot of boxes with superheroes in them.
Secondly, in terms of pretentiousness... based not on my views of others entirely but mostly on my own experiences and those of friends, I think that manga fans can be pretty pretentious. When I called myself one, I was. I didn't want to read comics that weren't manga or didn't look like manga. And almost any manga would do. I just lapped everything up. I know other people have done exactly the same, when entranced by the wonderful and unique world that manga has to offer... it's a phenomenon unlike any other. It's just that some people like myself find it to grow stale after all the "manga cliches" have been read and explored and written a thousand times. I feel like manga is something people really need to experience, but it's difficult not to get sucked in and get excited by every cliche it spits out. I don't think that should happen. Of course, like I've said before, this can apply to books and films and art and all sorts of things, not just comimcs. Basically, I want everyone to have a good balance of views, which sadly isn't possible because humans are naturally too opinionated. But that isn't a bad thing either!
I hope I've made some of my opinions clear in this post. I'm almost too open-minded for my own good sometimes, I know I tend to make a point and then say afterwards, "but the opposite is fine too in moderation!". Thank you very much for giving me the opportunity to post this because I've been thinking about it for quite a while. Sorry for any mistakes too, I'm tired and can't be bothered to check it over.

don't worry- your post makes perfect sense to me, and thank you very much- it's very interesting to hear it =)
i feel exactly the same way about everything you have said! (and yes i am way too open minded for my own good too..it does tend to make you a hypocrit somewhat) it's a very complex ad interesting subject i rekon!
after much consideration for a long long time, some time ago, i ended up figuring chlicbes can be ok, can be- and really i have notihng against them as such, i tihnk what i am against is when people take a cliche and say 'oh man this is the best idea ever, i am a genius' sort of thing! and that to me, is what makes a bad something or other....i think some cliched comics are great, as long as the creator knows it is so.
for me right now , i'm tryin' to find artists who go above and beyond these stereotypes as much as possible, who can do comics everyone can enjoy, no matter who they are- i feel this way aobut PIXAR (althugh understand you can't please everyone, ofc.) but moslty they as a group tend to go above all of that crap and make soemtihng everyone tends to enjoy =) oh btw sorry if none of that was related to what you were saying- i think i am rambling =S

No, it's totally relevant! I agree about Pixar. They are undoubtedly one of the best companies in the world for storytelling to me.
And yes, cliches can be okay. It's just when there are so many of them and and it unclear if the author recognises what they're doing... it gets boring.
