If you don't know what you want, figure out what you do not want and work from there.
This exercise reduces the solution set very quickly so that you have a smaller set to find the answer in.
Not only that, but when you're dealing with emotions or personal situations, finding there is something you can figure out quickly is a serious confidence boost, as you no longer feel completely helpless and aimless.
