4290 meters. This is the altitude of the Kyzyl Pass, the « physical border » between two Central Asian countries, the tough Tajikistan and the green Kyrgyzstan. The driver took our passports for the police control at the border. At this moment, you should not leave the car, or do anything which could « irritate » the border guards. I was starring from the window, the scenery was just incredible. « Should I give a try? Should I get out? » This is not the moment to reflect too much.

Winter is Coming
Photo and caption by Artur Stanisz
Mountains, mid-winter, mid-day, during the snowstorm. Can there be better conditions for a winter landscape photo? Maybe there can, but for me, it is almost as good as it can get. What I noticed while hiking in winter conditions is that the same view with clear skies gives an impression of space and visible landscape seems distant, sometimes even insignificant. But it all changes when the snowstorm sets in.

You have to get up before the sun but it's so worth it. Twilight in Glacier National Park. Going to the Sun road was still open for travel on this September morning. The sun peaking through the clouds made for this peaceful and somewhat surreal scene. It only lasted 10 minutes and it was gone...

Rain in the Desert

Rain clouds over the Atacama Desert (Chile), which is the most arid desert in the world. Climate change has affected our planet and our day-to-day. Some climate experts say that in the central region of this desert there are places that are up to 4000 years without rain. Stitched Panorama made from Cerro Toco, above 5200 meters altitude.

Birds Overhead
Photo and caption by John Birch
Bass Rock is an imposing rocky island rising over 100m sheer from the Firth of Forth. It is estimated to host about 150,000 Northern Gannets nesting in close proximity to the cliffs, of which several thousand are in the air at any one time, circling in the same direction to avoid a collision. I used a slow shutter speed to capture the impression of movement overhead to contrast with the still birds on the cliffs.

In the storm
Photo and caption by Daisy Gilardini
Due to climate change in the Antarctic peninsula during the spring there are much more snow precipitations. This is causing stress in the reproduction cycle of the penguins which need pebbles in order to build their nest. The higher snow coverage is resulting in building the nest later with the consequence of a higher percentage of unsuccessful birds.

Endangered Boreal Forest
Photo and caption by Stephen Chan
Aerial photo of the Boreal Forest in Nahanni National Park Reserve in Canada. Milder winters and warmer summers trigger more forest fires. In addition, a warming climate lifts the temperature limitations that once kept the pine beetle epidemic in check. The devastating pest is spreading fast and going more north. Such threat of ecological disasters to the entire Boreal Forest ecosystem will become more massive and destructive.

Crack in the Ice
Photo and caption by alasdair turner
A crack in sea ice of the Southern Ross Sea, Antarctica. As the cracks open they refreeze immediately creating the series of lines you see in this images. The black line in the center is very thin ice. Specs of windblown dirt from the Mt Erebus Volcano are also covering the ice surface which increases the melting of the sea ice. This image is part of an ongoing 3 year project to document the most remote ocean on the planet and its rarely seen places.

Dream came true. First time we've managed to arrange aerial photo-shoot in Patagonia. Unforgettable experience... In Patagonia, the Andes mountain range shows its true beauty with some of the most spectacular mountains on the planet. The sheer granite faces of Fitzroy Massif and erupting out of the Patagonian ice-cap rock spires of Cerro Torre always were my main subjects in Argentinean part of Patagonia.

Fracturing Icecap
Photo and caption by Chris Bray
Flying above Iceland for two hours on a doors-off helicopter to take photos of it's amazingly diverse landscapes, perhaps the most dramatic moment was lifting up over this ash-covered, fracturing edge of the icecap where the otherwise perfect white icing fragments and starts it's slow-motion tumble down towards the ever receding glacier front below. I love the lines, the patterns, the symmetry and the colour of these volcanic ash-laced crevasses - seemingly soft yet hard.

American Flowers #1

In Greenland's pristine landscape lies a US Air Force base which was abandoned in 1947 and everything was left behind, vehicles, asbestos laced structures, and over 10,000 aviation fuel barrels. The Inuits who live in the region call the rusted remains American Flowers. In 2014 and 2015 I camped out solo to photograph it. In 2015 my 5 day solo camping trip turned into 8, as I couldn't get picked up do to the weather.

Toxic Vanity
Photo and caption by Eleanor Ryder
This image is a magnification of plastic particles in eyeliner exploring just one facet of the synthetic swarm suspended in our oceans. The particles, lash lengthening fibres, illuminating powders and glitters these products contain are in fact tiny pieces of plastic. Every time we wash these products from our bodies or ingest them as we lick the glosses from our lips, we unknowingly add to the trillions of micro plastic particles currently infesting every level of the ocean.

The View Outside Facebook HQ
Photo and caption by Chris McCann
Eighty percent of the San Francisco Bay Area wetlands - 16,500 acres - has been developed for salt mining. Water is channeled into these large ponds, leave through evaporation, and the salt is then collected. The tint of each pond is an indication of its salinity. Micro-organisms inside the pond change color according to the salinity of its environment. This high salinity salt pond is located right next to Facebook HQ where ~4,000 people work every day.

Struggle of life
Photo and caption by Jacob Kaptein
To restore original natural dynamics in streams many measures are necessary. In the 'Leuvenumse beek' a nature organisation tried to increase heterogeneity of the river bottom and water retention by putting dead wood in the streamsystem. In autumn when rainfall is high, pieces of forest get flooded. Once i saw this little beech in the water, trying to survive under these harsh conditions. I returned sometimes to this place to take pictures. One evening all the conditions were satisfactory.
